Just reading his autobiography at the minute and it made me wonder, just how good do you lads recall him being?

I'm remember him as a good batsman, pretty solid but rarely used to convert fifties into big scores.

Ended up with a very decent record though, 6700 tests runs at 44 from 100 tests, and who's to know how many more he may have played without his off the field issues.

Excellent player. Got gritty 70s on dicey pitches when we really needed them. Until 2009 him and Bell would have had similar stats but Thorpe's contribution was far more valuable.

Good points. He always seemed to make a contribution when it was needed and was instrumental in test wins in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2000/2001.

Remember him being a very good player of spin too - Murali hated bowling to him IIRC.
 
He was still England's best batsmen in 2005, but England messed it up a bit resting him before the ashes v Bangladesh and putting Bell in. Bell wasnt really test quality at that time but neverthless scored loads against Bangladesh.

As a result he couldnt really be droppedand England went into the ashes without their best batsman and Bell barely madeva run.

We won anyway though and Bell is now a world class player so it all worked out :)
 
Was a great player and also played against much better bowlers than are around now

Never gave his wicket away and often got England out of a hole

I'm not sure he would have. He wasn't a man for slapping easy hundreds coming in at 200/2. Best I have seen in an England shirt at 40/3 though.
 
Great player, often stood his ground when the batting was collapsing around him. Compare his average with peers like Butcher, Atherton, Hussain, Hick, Crawley etc and I bet he is miles ahead. Pity his wife was such a twat.
 
great player always looked a class act and one of a very few players who would take on any attack. Would easily get in the team now and would probably be the star batsmen imo
 
He was always good to watch because I felt he could adapt to the situation as soon as he came to the crease. If we needed runs, he could usually get them provided he was able to get himself 'in'.

It was just a pity that firstly, the team around him was generally shite, and secondly he had off the field problems.

I remember him scoring what felt like a lightening quick ton against the convicts back in 97 and being an absolute joy to watch. Pity we didn't select him in 05, he deserved to be part of an Ashes winning team and at the time was easily better than Bell, although Bell might not be the player he is now without the experience he got from that series.

Thorpe played against Bangladesh. I think it was his 100th test at the Riverside.
IIRC it was always the plan to bring in Pieterson for the Aussies and because Bell scored so many runs against Bangladesh it was decided to stick with him so Thorpe got dropped.

I always liked Thorpe. As said by others he could always be relied on when England were struggling. Much better batsman than the others of that era.

I didn't think that much of his book to be honest - perhaps it was because it was the last of the Hussain, Atherton, Stewart etc books I had read and they all covered the same era. One story i did here about Thorpe from an Alec Stewart talk in involving an over being bowled by Chris cairns:

Cairns bowls to Thorpe and neats the bat ball after ball and he is regularly having a go at Thorpe's marital problems which culminated in:

"No wonder your wife left you if you are as bad in bed as you are at batting"

to which Thorpe replied

"Next time your sister approaches a train crossing tell her to look both left and right before going across"

to which Cairns had to be restrained by his NZ team mates :neutral:

you missed of Robin 'the judge' Smith, he only had to face the West Indies of that era. Would also suggest Ather's as it was only really Mcgrath who got the better of him.

TBF I think Cairns crossed the line first. It just goes to show that Alec Stewart is a tit. He should be keeping that to himself not telling a bunch of pissed up fellas on a night out.
