Graham Thorpe - RIP

Family have revealed he took his own life and that the serious illness he had couple of years ago was a result of a previous attempt.
Horrible news, that, but not wholly unexpected after hearing some of the tributes and reading between the lines.

Brave of his family to speak out and, as they have said, we can only hope that he's in a better place now.

RIP Graham - you were a star, and will be one forever.

That is terribly sad information. I can't imagine what was going on in his head to make the decision to end his own life. God bless those left behind and to Graham too.

Just awful to learn that. And to remember that he was sacked as an England coach in February 2022. Cricket’s toll on its players’ and coaches’ mental health really needs to be reconsidered.

It's the most brutal of sports at the top end of things. So much time away from the family, so much temptation when doing so – very little time in a top cricketer's life when they are not playing the game or travelling, training and touring each year.

I knew he had been battling mental health issues for a couple of decades and more. I guess I should have joined the dots. Just six months older than me. As mentioned previously here, born in same hospital too. I always had a connection. Devastating.

Poor Graham his wife and children.

PS very much liking your avatar, Dan x 4

Absolute terrible stuff that, really hope he's at peace now, feel for those left behind.

Having been in that place only last year it's just the only rational thought you have, even though it's the most irrational thing to think.

Just desperately sad and I hope his family can heal in time.

I think most people, including myself, had worked out what had happened when his passing was announced. But to see it all laid bare with comments from his daughter makes it even more desperately upsetting to read.

It’s devastating for the people left behind had a friend who committed suicide it’s absolutely brutal. Knew he had been suffering serious depression sometimes no matter how much people try the person just can’t see the light at the end of tunnel.

Really sad he was a great player and a real fighter.

That is absolutely tragic news the poor man. It's bad enough for his family and friends that they should have suffered such a loss but they must have been moving heaven and earth for a long time to prevent such an awful outcome . What a bitter blow it must be for all of them.

Very sad news and it always hits home when someone is the same age as you too - as you try to imagine what may have been happening in their life and parallels to your own etc?

However, it's a terrible illness like any other and obviously in this case he wasn't able to overcome it.

RIP

It was my first thought when his death was announced, as he had struggled with his mental health when he played, but then I remembered reading he'd been very ill a couple of years ago and dismissed it. Very sad and life must have been agonising for his family at times. Cricket seems to have a higher incidence of suicide than other sports but I may be wrong. RIP Graham and I hope being able to talk about it helps his family and friends.

Lets hope something good comes out of this. awarness and the such. Its a terrible thing and the repercussions go wide. You ask did i miss something , did i say wrong thing.

Meanwhile that person was filtering you out completely

I was shocked when I'd heard a couple of years ago that he attempted suicide. Even though his troubles were well known you never think something like that would happen.

Great cricketer in his day. Very sad.
