IIrc for 05 it was a no brainer at the time to bring KP in,there was a debate that you could have kept Thorpe but that would have involved dropping Bell.

Aye, issue was Bell was a young lad who'd made big runs against Bangladesh whereas Thorpe was the last of the old guard who had baggage from various hidings off the convicts.

KP had no test matches behind him but obviously his ODI stuff made it impossible to leave him out. I'm pretty sure in the press at the time it was more of a KP v GT debate, but I might be wrong

I know at the time, I thought it was the wrong call to bring KP in for Thorpe.

Has that been confirmed? Always thought how discreet they kept his illness suggested either it was very serious, or mental health related.

Really sad news, a fantastic batsman.

I dont think it's a case of being wrong,different journalists/ ex pros all had a view.That said I remember after the ashes some stating they couldnt believe there was a debate about KP's inclusion,hindsight n that

Thorpe’s own record against the Aussies in that era was excellent. He didn’t seem to be as spooked by McGrath and Warne as the others. His form and record going into the 05 season was brilliant and he was very unfortunate not to have ended his career with an Ashes victory on his CV.

Really sad news. One of my favourite cricketers

I couldn’t believe it at the time, they won so no one can really argue but he should of been in that team ahead of bell for me, such as classy player, skilful and great to watch, My favourite English batsman ever RIP
 
Gutted and that's absolutely no age at all.

One of my favourite players growing up and he autographed my bat after scoring 200+ runs I think it was against Durham at Darlington in the mid 90s
 
Loved watching him as a kid, stoic and silky smooth batsman, high quality and rock solid. One always felt he was going to rebuild the innings, when walking in after a characteristic late-90s top order collapse, and more often than not he did exactly that.

Karachi 2000 surely both his and Hussain's finest hour.
 
RIP. I am not into cricket much these days but loved test match cricket when it was the likes of Thorpe, Atherton, Gough etc. Thorpe was my favourite player back then.

I appreciate what you’re saying, but unless I’ve read incorrect sources, his average against the Aussies was almost 46, and in Australia above 48. He was a rock and would have really strengthened the batting in 2005. Bell only scored two 50s in that series and had a career average of around 35 vs the Aussies.
