going to Oz for the Ashes

Booked a ticket and a hotel deal, probably overpaid (definitely overpaid) but I didn’t want to risk waiting until the tickets go on sale officially. As a side point a single supplement hotel and ticket combo was 1.7k and a 2 person h/t combo was 1.8k.

9 months and counting 😎

Be interesting if you can post a breakdown of costs once you're all sorted, something i want to do, but this winter will be too soon, so maybe the tour after

I paid more as we went with a holiday company, if you can book outright you can save loads.

I fly London > Hong Kong > Sydney, the flights + hotel for the 12 nights was £6.7k for 4 people (2 adults 2 kids) so roughly 1.7kpp. Could have saved money but we chose a hotel which was close to the CBD.

I actually found flights which was London > Tokyo (3 day trip) > Sydney (11 days) > Tokyo (2 days) > London that was 1k pp all with direct flights.

The hotel/ticket was 1.8k for 2 people based on 5/6 nights. My plan at the moment is either take the bairn or sell the extra ticket. Running total is 8.5k which is obviously mental but booked through love holidays so the monthly payment is 600 (flights + hotel) which is nowhere near as bad.

A different tour and an outlier cost-wise but me and a mate priced up Hyderabad test last year and flight/ nice hotel came to about £700 all in. Wish I’d gone after that miracle win…

If you want total ballpark figures I reckon £1,500ish for a SA, WI or SL test inc spends, £2,500+ for an Aussie one. Whack on an extra 25% on for a double header.

Like I said earlier in the thread, for a double header if you’re happy to miss Day 1 or the first game and Day 5 of the second it becomes much more affordable as you miss the days the tour groups block book.

anyone ever been? we've wanted to go for years and thinking of going for the 4th Test next xmas in Melbourne.

obviously the ground is massive, but is it easy enough to get tickets?

i see there are a few tour operators online, like The Barmy Army and a few others that offer packages including ticket, hotels and busses etc.., does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

Done it 3 times but the last one was 2010 so probably advice out of date. Think we joined cricket Australia from memory and got tickets in the bay next to the army / England fans. All a far cry from the first time in 2002 when it was about 40 quid for a 4 day pass and it was general ground admission sit where you like 😂 and they had a reduced capacity of about 60k at the time anarl. Won the ashes in 2005 over here and the whole world wanted to gan and 2006 was a feckin nightmare.

I was living down under with my best mate for the walloping 5/0 in 2006 did a 3 days of the Gabba at least Colly scored a few.

Got some small measure of pride back when he inspired us the win the tri-one day series.

Was so cheap compared to over hear as your travel was included with the your ticket.

Don’t hold out much hope this winter as last 15 tests there we have managed 2 draws and lose the rest.

But it’s an experience the MCG is something else did a one dayer there and Sydney.

Definitely do Japan, if you not been before. Fantastic place.

Saw us on the opening day of a defeat in Adelaide in 2006.

Got really cheap Business Class flights from Heathrow to Brunei (with a fuel stop in Dubai) then onto Darwin. It was less than the price of Emirates or BA Economy tickets, but it was a bloody long trip even in Business Class

Stayed with friends in Darwin and then I flew on my own down to Adelaide, so only needed hotel for the night before and night after before flying back to Darwin. Hotel was very expensive I remember

For tickets I went through Durham Cricket Club if i remember right. I was a member at the time and they had advertised an offer with a tour company. I spoke to the tour company and explained i didnt need hotel or flights and they happily sold me a ticket only package. It was pricier than the normal price but not bad at all. I actually ended up using their transport from the hotel as well, as the pickup point wasn't far from where I stayed.

One thing I'd say was, I was sat with lads who were on the organised tour, and they'd all loved it. The company had laid on loads of things to do, but left loads of free time as well. Although it was expensive, I thought it sounded amazing for a cricket fan.

Only a slightly related note, The Gabba is due to be abandoned and demolished in 2032.

Appreciate that. Ashes is certainly one I want to do, ideally love to go over for the Boxing Day test at some point, then onto Sydney for New Year.

I'd also like to do West Indies or New Zealand but others i'm not too fussed over.

South Africa (grass banks at the grounds, great pubs, hot) and Sri Lanka (decent little grounds, beautiful country) are dead good mind. Cape Town/ Newlands is the best ground in the world to attend imo, albeit I’ve not done the lot obviously!

India I kinda get as you have to be someone who’ll suck up a bit of squalor at times.

I loved the CT test and SL on the whole as a place, but wouldn't rush back to India.

Haven’t read the whole thread but maybe join the barmy army just to get into some of their members only social events.

Once you’re in a pub chatting to people that generally opens doors to what else is going on.

Anyone traveling and staying in hostels will have no problem finding some events at Christmas. Sydney is usually heaving with a massive party at Brontë Beach (and others). I’m sure Melbourne will be the same.

Tickets are expected to go on sale 3rd June, BA groups in Aus will have codes for the block next to the BA.

Does anyone need help

Just got my tickets for the MCG Day 1 and 2. Myself, son, his girlfriend and 5 of the in laws.

Sitting with the Aussies as more of them

I would've went day 3 as well but probably pushing my luck with the missus.

Proper jealous. An Ashes Trip is a Bucket List item for me. Probably more for when retired with no kids or dog in the house. Probably may also require some sort of lottery win too.

Hope you have a fantastic time if you end up going.
