Getting into cricket

A few years back I contacted 5 local clubs asking if needed players, or even net bowlers etc as I was keen to get back into the game. Not one of them replied. As a kid I used to practice at Percy Main CC in North Shields and even they were f***ing snobs, looking down their nose at my cheap bat and "old fashioned" pads - I was 16 years old FFS

Surprised at that mind. I suspect that if your message had hit the right person they'd have snapped your hand off for help.

I could only contact the people listed on the various facebook pages/websites etc etc
It's something that is rife throughout middle class sports like cricket and golf
Even the 50 over game we had a few years back with a bunch of lads on here had a couple of them trying be "in charge" and excluding others from decision making. Maybe it's an unconscious thing but it definitely happens. I left my last cricket team, 2 years ago because there was a culture of cliques and bullying
 
I haven't played club cricket for about 25 years so the following is subject to contradiction. If you want to have a go at playing cricket then the basic skill to work on is fielding. Practice how to catch, stop and throw the ball so your at least competent at it, before ever going on to a cricket pitch. It's the easiest skill to acquire but does take a lot of practice to become competent, something which even Michael Vaughan was incapable of doing. You may never become the best cover driver the world has ever seen, nor, the fastest bowler. But if you can catch/stop 90% of what comes your way you will be an asset to any team. If you bat and get a first baller, or bowl and get carted, it doesn't really matter as that has happened to all the best cricketers as well. So get the long barrier out and never forget "Catches Win Matches".
