Geertruida

Love Hume and Ballard but that back four that started today is probably our best.. I say that as someone who rates Ballard massively
It’s controversial but I agree. Could maybe make a case for Ballard over alderete this second half of the season but today’s back four would be my first choice.

I rate Ballard and Hume, I just think the players we’ve signed are of a different level. Hume in particular stands out because while there’s less between them as defenders, geertruida is in a different stratosphere in terms of ability on the ball. Just makes it all the more odd when Hume is selected in midfield

My only criticism of him is the use of geertruida and le fee this season. Just can’t understand it at all.

I can only think of the occasional lack of working back and tracking back has hindered Geertruida. There's been several occasions where its been a bit evident - Brentford away in midfield I thought he lacked any kind of intensity and he was taken off and didn't play for a month IIRC. Tracking back against Arsenal away for one of their goals he was one our deepest players and about 32 players got back before him.

I think early season we saw he was a bit too lax on and off the ball to be playing centre half regularly in the PL and the he has good and bad moments in midfield. He looks a quality right back to me and looks excellent on the ball when he shows up in midfield and he's a really good option to have, but I feel Regis just hasn't seen enough intensity at times, which is a shame.

Class today like proper gutted his shot didn't curl in.

Can tell he's so much better technically than Hume but guess the club just don't want to buy him sadly.

Unfortunately Le Bris loves Hume and we play him ahead of Geertruida despite Geertruida being miles better.

I'd sell Hume personally

I wouldnt. There was an article in the Athletic this week about how hard it is to keep competent backups who are capable enough to step in even if they arent necessarily as good as your first choice.

Hume is definitely good enough to step in and is unlikely to kick up a fuss at the moment.

In other words, when it comes to central defenders, Sunderland are spoilt for choice. I would always find a place for Ballard; he has a presence at set-pieces

Hume is an engine mind. 100% effort every game. Sort of player a manager would love because I think he follows their instructions to the letter. Ended up in some great attacking positions today.

What today did confirm though is that Hume is the third best right back at the club and doesn't have the attacking prowess to play in an advanced midfield position.

Geertruida showed today that he's a top end EPL fullback. Now this might have also had something to do with Hume as well but Cunha didn't get a kick today until he moved inside.

Would like to see the same back four for the remaining two games but without the extra cover Hume provides to see how they manage because that looks like a EPL back hour to me and we'd be daft not to trigger any clause we might have for Geertruida.

Yes I like Hume a lot for his effort and flexibility. But certainly in midfield he just doesn't look after the ball enough.

I can’t but think there must be a es on other than ability for his lack of starts. I mean at Newcastle away he was our best player yet has not featured really since until today, where he was again alongside Le Fee a stand out performer. I hope he signs, but if he doesn’t I would understand it from his perspective.

Yeah, I think he has performed well at centre back, right back and centre midfield this season....we need players like this in the squad, but will he be prepared for another season like this where he is a squad player and never likely to start more than two games in a row.

Gertruida is a strange one to say the least. Every time he plays, he looks accomplished and very capable at this level but it's clear RLB doesn't see him as a reliable option to start regularly so you would have to assume there's something else going on behind the scenes. For me he should be ahead of Hume in the pecking order.
