Gateshead council

Whole thing is senseless
Council will soon be publishing 2 sets of figured
One showing air quality pre closing askew road
2nd post shutting
No doubt will be manipulated to show how great the scheme is
Will be further improved when people sack the area off and the whole area shuts down
Problem solved
Bit like when Newcastle published emmision fugures
And 7 of top ten locations were bus only lanes!
Thick as castle walls. The irony of the whole thing is that with Askew Road closed at High Level traffic will be diverted up past the civic centre so they chimps in charge can witness their own stupidity but it wont change a single thing
Will encourage more council employee sickness claims due to the poor air quality
We can't open the windows.......

There aren't tackling the issue they're tackling the symptom.

They need to persuade people onto public transport, not force them onto it. Shutting roads to force people off the roads will just mean
everyone will just find an alternate route.

It's like taping over a hole in the ceiling to prevent a drip. The water will just find another way through, you need to fix the leak.

How about :
If you park at a Metro station, you get a free day pass.
Create a free cycle repair shop in the arches next to the bridge for commuters
Create a more dedicated cycle route network, away from roads
Bigger discounts on annual travel passes bought through your employer
Dedicated cycle areas on Metros
Free park and ride services converting industrial scrubland into car parks with coffee shops and other services.

The problem here is and it's a thing that Gateshead Council misses is most people aren't going into Newcastle so having the best transport, free park and ride and cycle lanes etc. into the city centre isn't going to solve anything. The Tyne Bridge is the main route for most of East Newcastle; Byker, Wallsend etc to anywhere South. Unless you provide an alternative for these people nothing is going to change. It would be really interesting to see what the traffic levels are like through Low Fell now as I wouldn't be surprised if people who used to use Askew Road just go straight through to the Angel instead of going around the back of Gateshead. Anyone travelling into Newcastle from Askew Road would use the Redheugh Bridge.

Try getting from Walker to Team Valley without using the Tyne Bridge, driving through Newcastle or using public transport and that's where the problems are (it's not an unrealistic commute).

The only way they will solve the traffic problems is building a new bridge in the Pelaw / St Anthonys area but we know that wont happen.

The prep work was all done for the Friars Goose crossing. I think the proposed road was going to go down the old railway corridor and you can see it still on Google maps as being largely clear of developments. Ultimately a bridge here is the long term solution with it linking directly to the A194M and coast road. That won't be popular with the Tyne Tunnel people I imagine and it would be interesting to see if the contract for the TT prevents any new crossings.

Walked past yesterday and the cafe, block and bottle, tea sellers and hairdressers have all moved to Heaton Road, there’s only that minging looking kebab shop and the hydroponics place left.
for balance, that was down to network rail and nothing to do with gateshead council.

Oh aye; I know that as the rents were ramped up but the carnage created outside isn’t going to attract anyone else soon to take over.

Wasn't all nr
Gc started making noises last year about changing the access around the high level bridge and half moon pub
They are probably hugely relived to get out when they did

See Newcastles poorer brother is causing chaos to the roads both sides of the bridge today.

Tailbacks are quite long on both sides.
