FPS Gaming Mouse Choices

I thought this would be an interesting topic to share your own experiences and thoughts. It could help others and also help me if I’m missing something. I wish there were more specialist shops in the UK to visit so you can hold them in your hand before buying.

I’ve only really started pc gaming properly in competitive shooters 3-4 years ago. Before that I was a controller player. During that time, I’ve been experimenting with my grip and sensitivity settings using kovaaks or aim labs and a number of games. I’ve gone into a massive amount of detail during this time and put in 100s if not 1000s of hours.

I’ve discovered that for quick flicking or micro control I’m better with fingertip grip but smooth tracking it’s palm. Claw is somewhere in the middle of the 2.

Fingertips allow you to control vertical movement and flick better. Wrist and arm aiming gives you better control of horizontal.

Personally I’ve settled with a palm with slightly raised fingers. Somewhere between palm and claw.

Sensitivity
When using fingertip a higher sensitivity is better with somewhere between a 25-35cm / 360 is optimal.

When using a claw grip a 30-45cm / 360.

A palm grip requires a low sensitivity of 35-55cm / 360.

Game Type
The game you play also determines what grip and sensitivity is best. Do you need to stay on the target and track or quick flick and one shot? Do you need to do vertical movement much?

For faster games with a lower time to kill or vertical movement a fingertip or claw is best.

For slower paced games or ones with a higher time to kill then it’s claw or palm.

Mouse Choice
The best mouse largely depends on your grip and hand size. The lighter the mouse the better regardless and anything under 75g is optimal. Wireless is always better these days with latency comparable to wired now. The examples below are exactly that. Depending on your hand size determines extremes of length, height and width.

A palm grip mouse is better with a hump in the middle. A mouse such as a razor deathadder v3 pro:

Claw grip is better with a hump at the back and lower at the front. Something like the endgame xm2:

Fingertip grip requires a shorter low profile mouse. Something like the g wolves hsk pro + shows the extremes of this:

I’m currently using a Logitech g pro wireless superlight:
Logitech G PRO X SUPERLIGHT Wireless Gaming Mouse, HERO 25K Sensor, Ultra-light with 63g, 5 Programmable Buttons, 70 hours Battery Life, Zero Additive PTFE Feet, PC/Mac - Black https://amzn.eu/d/3lyPzqf

It’s widely regarded as a top tier choice for universal grip styles. It’s very neutral and worked for me while experimenting too. I’m not sure where I’m going next but it will be something for claw or palm.

What are your experiences and why do you use what you use?
Desk Space
Desk space will also play a part. Personally I have a huge desk so that wasn’t a barrier. If you have a small desk then you may need to go fingertip or claw to get the best out of it.

I would be looking at wired Razer , better latency and can get better quality for cheaper - its been years since last looked though so may be other brands just as good.

These days latency and sensor isn’t an issue with wireless. Some wireless ones go up to 4000hz polling rate with less than a ms latency.

The wire gets in the way and disturbs the balance of the mouse to the front with wired. Price is cheaper for wired of course.
