Umpires have been awful this test like. Fortunately with the modern game you can challenge them.

I'd be in his ear mind. Nothing overt, something like "you got to be somewhere this afternoon?" with a nice grin. Put it in his mind that he's wrongly giving them out. Might get him to keep his finger down later.

Not sure it'll get much easier against the spinner. I know one of his weapons is get a little extra bounce, which should go a bit as it gets softer I guess, but means they can keep low.
