Favourite all time SAFC XI

I love Sunderland to death but whenever people do a post like this I’ve always thought Jesus Christ we’ve hardly ever had any good or great players lol

Monty.
Irwin.
Ashurst.
Harvey.
Hurley.
McNab.
Usher.
Herd.
Sharkey.
Crossan.
Mulhall.

Course it was the first year i started going 63-64 and the first ever promotion.

Amazing how many of that team played virtually every game, plus the famous cup run as well.

Jim Baxter, by all accounts, was a shadow of his younger self at Rangers, apparently he'd started to spiral into alcoholism and being a protestant scot, was a bad influence and presence in a dressing room captained by an irish catholic (Hurley)
How good was he when he was at Roker? I'm way way to young to have seen him play at Sunderland but I've seen footage of him for Rangers & Scotland and he looked incredible
First game vs Leeds Sept '80 won 4-1

Turner (brilliant in the milk cup final season in a poor side)
Kay (Canoe)
Benno (cooler than penguins piss and chinned Speedie)
Elliott (could play anywhere)
Julio (got the shithouse carried off)
Summerbee (crossed as good as Beckham)
Bracewell (first time round, you knew he was to good and would be off)
Cana (sheer class, and was a looker as well....jammy kernt)
Cummins (little ball of magic, dancing feet, our Zola)
Rowell (boyhood hero)
Marco (all time fav Sunderland player)

Can't believe I'm leaving out players like Quinn & Phillips, Craig Russell (local lad, great kid as well), Arnott, Pop, Tommy Sorensen, Dickie Ord, Frank W, Leighton James, Super Ally McCoist

Since I was only in my mid teens, I recollect a cross between George Best and Messi (if Messi had a few red wines) 🤣

Monty
Malone Bennett Ord Van Aanholt

Phillips
Arca

First game I remember properly 1983 but had been before then to local away games. ( Coventry and Birmingham)

Surprised someone hasn't listed Gary Rowell as all 11. Still time like
One of my favourite all time players. Mind, I think a lot of nostalgia involved in this, as many players named will be boyhood heroes.
Favourite XI: Monty - Dick - Joe B - Jeff Clarke - Shaun Elliot - Bobby Kerr - Bracewell - Arnott - Frank W - G.Rowell - Pop. For never to be forgotten displays, moments of class & the memories. Benno can be the sub cos in my time there was only one.
I would have paid my money just to watch Frank Worthington - what a skilful player he was.

Me too, whai a player with touch, class & personality on tbe pitch, just how he'd look across and smile with the subtle hand signs as the place was singing the "oh w*nkie, w*nkie" song when he pkayed for other clubs.
