Fans Museum Fundraiser - Sunderland to Bilbao

The Fans Museum is currently doing a 24 hour virtual cycle from Sunderland to San Mamés stadium in Bilbao in order to raise funds to support their hub.

Several ex safc players will take part along with TV/radio presenters and local businesses people in order to raise the funds. Sky Sports News Presenter Tom White kicked off the event at 2pm UK time.

The aim is to raise £10,000 to cover the costs to bring their football team, which consists of players with different difficulties, to Bilbao and play a match against a team from Athletic Club Bilbao's Foundation which I'm organising through our branch Bilbao Black Cats.

The visit has been given the green light by Athletic's foundation.

The Black Cats have ties with the Basque club, with a supporters group over there and the charity is also hoping to play an match in Ireland against Sunderland's Irish Supporters Branch.

I got the idea to bring a team over to Bilbao last year in October after I saw that Athletic Bilbao foundation hosted Brentford Penguins form Brentford FC. The team was formed by players with down syndrome.

Athletic foundation has that team along with homeless, mental health and other learning difficulties.

When I was over for WBA in December, Michael told me they'd started a team made up of players struggling with mental health issues and other learning difficulties.

I asked him if he'd like to come to Bilbao with the team and I can contact Athletic's foundation. He said that'd be awesome.

Before coming over for International Fans Day, I got in touch with Galder Reguera, project manager, for Athletic Bilbao foundation and pitched the proposal, he accepted and said it's a great plan. I told Michael on IFD and that's when he said he'd need to think of a fundraising event to raise the money to cover costs which is where the Sunderland to Bilbao 24 hour cycle has come from.

When they come over, we'll arrange with Athletic Club a match and tour at their famous Lezama training facilities. They'll also probably get a free tour of San Mamés. Michael wants to coincide with an Athletic match in San Mamés so I'll see what sort of deal/arrangement I can make with them.

I imagine that he'd like to to take the lads away again after the Bilbao trip.

Hopefully, they can raise enough funds 🤞🏻
