Fan zone in town

Daft idea if they're charging for it like.

Mind, the previous fanzones were paid for by Sunderland BID, with the local bars paying into that. If the council have took it on and decided to do their own thing it might explain the change in direction. Strange to have moved it away from the local bars though.

Reading the description it's quite sad that it was such a flop. Up to 1,500 spectators and guaranteed to be an amazing atmosphere etc all mentioned

Unless I'm mistaken, other fanzones elsewhere (such as Times Square, Newcastle) have always charged and always been successful so Sunderland have decided to follow. Never going to work. Different culture in Sunderland.

Doesn't appear so.
That photo first appeared on Twitter before the England match even started, so it must’ve been the Denmark match. Also, you’d have to be wrong in the head to want to go and pay to stand outside in torrential rain drinking beer from plastic glasses instead of walk 2 mins the other way and have any amounts of pubs to choose from.

I can see it being popular when the weather is good - and as the tournament progresses.

Not my cup of tea, personally, but I’m sure some people will want that ‘sitting in the sun while watching the footy’ experience.
