Allardyce came into Newcastle in 2007, Newcastle had played in Europe in 10 or 11 of the previous 14 seasons, and the summer Allardyce came in, he spent over £30m iirc, which at the time was a lot. There was still hope and ambition there, and the desire to do well. Allardyce was also Shepherd's man, but Ashley still allowed the £30m spend.
The season doesn't finish after 21 games though and we were getting worse by the week. It was absolutely minging to see.
Clearly everyone on here was watching Newcastle every week so they know what the games were like

Not like the free flowing attacking stuff you’re playing now then

Pardew finished 5th. I assume the logic here is that of Benitez had managed this "better group of players" they'd have been challenging for the title? That's how this works right?

He was brought in to keep Newcastle up though, remember the Home game against Sunderland a game they needed to win and was delighted with a draw.

I know it's hard to believe this is not an anti Newcastle opinion, it is an anti-Benitez opinion felt the same at Liverpool and nearly choked on my breakfast cereal when he got the Real Madrid job, lasted about as long as I expected

Thing is he got the Real Madrid job. We can all say now with no sense of being held hostage to fortune that Jack Ross is never going to manage Madrid. Or Milan. Or Liverpool. Benitez has a reputation & more to the point a trophy winning record that exceeds all managers Sunderland have ever had. Yet he gets trashed on here.

That exceeds all managers Sunderland have ever had you say.
Well I'm sure we've had managers that have won the English top flight (something Rafa hasn't done) so you're talking shite.

Nothing shameful or embarrassing about it, we are where we are because we deserve to be.

You can only beat what's in front of you and as a fan you can either embrace it or go in the huff . And 30,000 of us have decided to embrace it and are enjoying it just like you lot did in the championship.

Like I said I've watched us in the premier league struggling and getting humped most weeks struggling to string 2 passes together and getting turned over at home by the likes of West ham just like you lot are doing, and it's not great in fact it's depressing

Nobody of a club of Sunderland stature wants to go to the Third Division so that football can be enjoyed again. Its just bullying & the strange thing is you complain about about the Premier when you get bullied yourselves.

That was a freak season where every thing where the stars aligned to ensure a fifth place finish.
Similarly for Leicester when they won the league 4 years later.
Newcastle were the 5th best team, and Leicester were the best, but it relied on many others having poorer seasons than they normally would.
Hence both clubs getting nowhere near that again

He could have quite easily put a good run together and had you in the top 10.
Mid table teams usually have good and bad spells in a season.

Why did you's want Bruce out after a poor start despite finishing 10th only a few months earlier? He could've put a run together and done ok again

Here we go. The glorious 1890s.
