Yet in the summer the same fans were arguing Lascelles and Shelvey were worth 50mill each and should have been in the England world cup squad. There's 100 million quids worth of 'talent' before you start.
If anybody says that Lascelles or Shelvey are worth £50 million, I suggest you don't take that person seriously.

Do you think they're worth that? I don't. Not even £50m for the pair.

I take them about as seriously as those trying to make out that the managers of Brighton, Huddersfield, Cardiff, Burnley etc are in a better position than Rafa. Net spend doesn't come into it - NUFC had a much stronger starting base rthan any of those. They were a championship team, Rafa chose to spend a large part of 70 million quid on players like Hanley, Murphy, Diame, Ritchie etc to 'get them up' without a thought about what happens next. He could have developed players, bought younger players that could develop into excellent ones On top of that he inherited players such as Shelvey and Lascelles that those clubs couldn't have dreamt of at the time. Those managers have had to cut their cloth, work with rejects and kids and develop teams over time, get promoted and only then after surviving have they had the chance to spend a bit of money.

Are you not happy with the way Benitez has done things?

Not at all - i've heard it argued at different times and that sort of fee was being bandied about for Lascelles. Surely that's the going rate in the market for players that should be in the England squad ;)

‘Large part of £70m’

Should have just said ‘part of £500m’ to bolster your point even more tbh

Canny funny how Benitez spent less than 20% of the whole of the Championship spend that year but Sunderland have spent north of 40% of the total League One spend this year.

He shouldn't be in the England squad. He's not that good. Might be one day.

Hes done alright Benitez. I think he has done no better or worse than the hand he has been dealt. My issue is more with those that think he is doing some sort of phenomenal job against the odds. Its a team that should easily stay up and probably will.

Fair enough. But he remains quite a good manager.

OK 60 million then ;)

So which of the following players do you think were bought with long term in mind:

Sels 4.5 Gamez 1.5 Hayden 2.5 Hanley 5.5 Diame 4.5 Murphy 3.5 Lazaar 3.0 Gayle 10 .0 Ritchie 14.0

Clark 5.0 Yedlin 5.0

He has a squad already with Elliott and Darlow (yet spend 4.5 mill on Sels) he has Lascelles, MBemba Haidara, Anita (yet spends 15 million on Lazaar, Clark, Gamez and Lazaar) He has Mitrovic and Perez to play up front in the championship (yet he spends 15 million on Murphy and Gayle) His choices.

He wasted an absolute f***ing fortune on players that were never going to contribute much if you went up and that was his choice. Perhaps he should have been smarter, backed himself to do what the managers of Cardiff, Huddersfield, Burnley etc had to do and he may have been more heavily backed in the premiership.

Of the ones you listed that he brought in before the championship season, the ones still at the club still play regularly.
The ones that were there as squad players have moved on.
No big deal. Promotions and relegations coinciding with a new manager often will see a high turnover of players. Its not really wasting money when still in profit and the aim was promotion, and with that the hundred million a year tv income.

He's done an ok job, no more no less.
No different to the jobs Warnock, Wagner, Dyche, Howe and others have done.
The difference is none of them are being heralded as werld class messiahs and saviours of a hurl nation against incredible odds.

Where's the fun in coming on when we're doing shite? I come here to take the piss and for the easy bites not to win the george cross deary
It’s Dearie. Numbnuts. Enjoy league 2 when you get there.

Agreed. Some sense eventually. The squad is of limited ability, so you get as many points as you can, by any means that you can.
Outside the top six that’s what it’s all about. Survival by all and any means. It’s not pretty, but a war of attrition never is. That’s what the game has become now, and it’s a f**king shame.

I just thought it seemed cheap mate, you's must have spent more than 45m on your team surely? Although maybe the loan signings bring it down.

Dubravka - 4
Yedlin - 5
Fernandes - 6
Schar - 3.5
Lascalles - 4
Manquillo - 4.5
Murphy - 12
Ki - Free
Diame - 3
Atsu - 6
Rondon - 2 loan fee

So yeah probs 30m plus loan fees, not bad really.

Tidied. £50M plus another £30M on the bench.

So the Mags want more money to spend on players like Murphy ...
... that'll definitely move them up the table.
