Think it’s a case of fining people in Australia for example, for not turning out.
It’s only a $20 penalty. And it says:
  • The voter isn't actually compelled to vote for anyone because voting is by secret ballot.
In Sweden you don’t get fined but have the option to abstain.

So forcing everyone to vote is fairly pointless and it only serves to make the turnout look better.

How do the other countries manage this? How can you force someone to vote? I’ve seen it’s compulsory in some countries but not sure how.

for referendum type voting they have a minimum turnout criteria, and in some cases they also stipulate that any vote can only be pursued if at least between 60 or 70% vote for it. So with Brexit that result would not have carried in some other countries (the ones with proportional representation) … which in hindsight kind of makes sense because if as in the UK the vote and result is close (as was with Brexit) it then generates all sorts of additional issues further down the line getting any bill or vote through parliament. Hindsight is a wonderful thing ;)
