English cricket - not as bad as we think?

There are some English pundits (Michael Vaughan) who revel in the team doing badly. Geoff Boycott was miserable in an entertaining way but he did it for any team that had performed poorly. Vaughan lays into English players in a way that can get a bit nasty and sometimes it comes across he has a personal agenda. He's much more tolerable when doing neutral games because he's not compelled to look for negatives all the time.

As for our team when we are good we can be scintillating to watch but when we are down we can go down without a fight. However I don't believe we are unique in that sense. The Australians had an impeccable home record for so long and had never lost at home to India until 2019 but they've since hosted India at home again and lost again. India had at the start of the decade lost 4-0 to us in England and then 4-0 in Australia, then we beat them 2-1 on their own turf. They had a really old team that had individual legends at the top of the order but no all rounders, no fast bowlers and terrible athleticism in the field. India have rebuilt themselves since as a top modern day team.

India is a good analogy. They recognised where the weaknesses were and went all out to address it. Our test batting has been terrible since 2013 and the ECB shrugs it's shoulders, says there isn't the talent in the CC and white ball matters more anyway
