England XI in your lifetime

I'm 39, so from about 1980 onwards.......

Gooch
Cook
Pieterson
Gower
Thorpe
Stewart
Botham
Swann
Anderson
Gough
Caddick

I've been watching test match cricket since the late 70s so here's mine:

Boycott
Cook
Pietersen
Gower
Stewart (w)
Botham
Flintoff
Swann
Gough
Anderson
Caddick

12th man would be Derek Randall and I would make sure one of the starting XI was always off the pitch so he could field throughout the whole game.

Could be tempted to improve the batting by bringing in Vaughan or Gooch for Caddick.

Cook
Trescothick
Vaughan
Pietersen
Bell
Flintoff
Prior
Swann
Gough
Caddick
Anderson

I startes watching at the start of the 2005 Ashes

Trescothick
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Prior
Swann
Anderson
Harmison
Jones

So it's basically a combination of the 2005 team and the current team.

I am much older than those who posted above, so:

Boycs,
Gooch,
Lamb,
Barrington,
Smith (Robin),
Botham,
Flintoff,
Knott,
Hoggard,
Snow,
Underwood.

You've got the same bowling attack as me, but I hummed about picking Willis who I only really saw bowl twice. If I was a bit older like you (;-)), he would be opening my attack.

Good idea with Arkle.

First proper memories are 1989 so Botham and Gower are excluded because they were on the wain by then:

Cook
Gooch
Trott
Pietersen
Stewart
Prior
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Anderson
Gough

Tests. I'm 32. So my memory is 1990 onwards, bit too late for Botham

Cook
Gooch
Vaughan
Pietersen
Thorpe
Flintoff
Prior
Swann
Gough
Harmison
Anderson

Harmison at his peak obviously

I started watching when you did and I think my side would be the same, with maybe Hoggard fighting Harmison for his place. Pleased to see Thorpe in there - probably only averaged 41 or so but he was the best ever at chipping out a 70 in a tough situation on a dodgy pitch.

Very surprised at the amount of mentions Caddick has on here.

Still reckon after all these years I have never seen a more classier English batsman than Gower when in full flow. Just use to make it look oh so easy. Had a cover drive to die for8-)

Alex Steward would have the gloves in that team

Best English keeper/bat ever imho. His keeping in the latter years, for a bloke approaching 40, was top class.

Averaged 39 batting anywhere from 1-7 against the very best bowlers in cricket history (not like the shite these days, i could average 40 against some of the modern day bowling attacks).

Similar era as the OP, i'll go with;

Tresco
Gooch
Vaughan*
Thorpe
KP
Stewart +
Botham
Flintoff
Gough
Anderson
Tuffnell
