Striker
He has the best list A average ever shortly before the Hundred stopped him playing the format.his cricinfo c.v. Is very impressive given that "that era of rich options" has long gone. No mention of any extra-curricular with the likes of Mrs Key
Hain's 50-over form has been remarkable, marked by regular low-risk runs and the ability to rotate the strike against spin impressively in the middle overs, and his average - in the high 50s - has consistently been the best by an England player in List A history. In T20 cricket, he has been a mainstay of the Birmingham Bears side, but in an era of rich options for the national white-ball team, his England call-up has proven elusive.
Only Gaikwad and Bevan with a better one.
Mental to not give that a go, especially when as both you @Rip Van Fish said he's a very handy T20 player too.
So it's not like he's not got the acceleration in his game alongside the anchor role he would perform like Root did for many years.
We seem obsessed with just getting as many people that can strike over 100 from get go in the ODI side and 150 in the T20 side. Even if it means when it goes wrong a lot we don't give a fuck.
Like we learnt nothing from how bad the World Cup was because we couldn't build innings. So we've doubled down on it.
