dont see sense in a nightwatchman, means its likely we'll be about 10-1 in the morning plus our decent batsmen are moved one down the order...woakes at 8 for example

Said for a long time we need openers who can just hang about and take the shine off the ball. A night watchman might inadvertently be our best chance of achieving this.

In this side with the Ashes coming up we curremtly have a opening batsman who does not even open for his county and a number 3 who with all respect has done very little to justify his selection.
We have had a team that for the last 5 years have struggled in the top 3 postitions yet still after all these years our most experienced and talented batsman refuses to move up the order and take more responsibility.
Root should bat 3 or even open allowing Roy to bat on the middle order

The top three are a real worry. Burns and Denly don't look like Ashes-standard batsmen.

Exactly how many years of struggle in the top 3 do we need, how many new players at 3 and openers failing do we need before Root moves up to either open or 3.
I agree it will also give Roy more of a chance down the order rather than unfairly sicking him straight into the lions den.

Root has scored 180 opening the batting. His wanting to bat at 4 not 3 is laughably 'first world' considering some of the issues facing the team.
Complete contrast with Bangers stepping up for Durham.

because the first wicket usually falls instantly, he virtually opens anyway, so why not step up

Yes we have a massive problem have done for years, yet to solve that problem we throw rookie after rookie at that problem.

Finn, Woakes, Onions or whoever else was in better form would have taken the wickets if he hadn't played.
For example, 11 wickets in the last Ashes, at an average of 48, 9 wickets in the preceding home series Vs WI at 37. How many times, prior to getting dropped in SL, did he take a place from a spinner, on subcontinent trips?
That said he has been a great bowler for England in the main.
