It does make a difference, he is averaging 12 more at 4

12!!!!

But by scoring 40 at 3 he is scoring 13 more than Vince at 3 and even more than whoever bats 4 when Root bats 3

13!!!!!

I want Root at 4 but it’s not as straightforward as you make out

At the moment there's very little difference between batting 3 or 4. I'm out of touch with the county game. Are there any obvious candidates to open?

Burns and Gubbins are the two untried openers that are the next cabs on the rank. I know little about them other than Gubbins has a weakness against spin and we have Sri Lanka away next!

Too soon for Gubbins. He looked tailor made for a bit, but injuries have stopped him kicking on. His average is nowt flash at the moment either.

Difficult to see what more Burns can do. He deserves a go.

Stokes is bowling well here.

But Rahane has looked very good, better than Kohli.

Get ooooooot.

You can't smash quality spin and get away with it for long.

Still fuming about that ridiculous decision, this is the problem with Curran though, he hasbeen picked as a bowler, needs to bowl

Harsh.

The fourth seamer rarely gets much of a look in when it's turning like this. If Woakes were playing, he'd not be getting much of a bowl either. Just like Ali would bowl few overs if it were swinging.

Great to see Ali fired up, its embarrassing that Smith had Rashid ahead of him.

This would be a really good win, the way Buttler, Stokes and Curran batted yesterday could be the deciding factor

We have issues but are still a good team.
