England ODI team…

Classic94

Full Back
A long way off, but this is how I’d line up in ODIs post CT:

Smith (wk)
Buttler
Banton
Duckett
Brook (c)
S Curran
Bethell
Carse
Rehan
Archer
Mahmood

Let’s assume we eventually move on from Rashid. Root to focus on Tests. I’d have Brook captain and open with Buttler. As our best ODI player, he should face as many overs as possible. We’re not good enough for him to be hiding down at 5/6.

Duckett at 4 because he actually has some clue against spin. Curran in as a batsman that bowls, unless someone else demands selection. Swap him out for a spin option depending on conditions.

Complete guesswork, but fun to predict seeing how well things are currently going…

Buttler opening in t20 yeah, but can’t see him opening in 50 over stuff.

Banton played well today, but it’s still a baffling pick from the management (well he played well but was dropped early and should have been ran out)

Root has to play. And if not Hain should.

I’d still like Crawley to take white ball seriously, in theory he’s a perfect ODI opener.

I really like the Hain shout actually. Very unlucky not to have played more.
He doesn't fit into the dressing room. He is a shy quiet man that doesn't play golf and doesn't drink etc etc.

The games he has played he was not part of the lads dressing room or after game culture.

We need Root to hold an end as none of our batters score 100's.

We need all an rounder coming in 7. Curran is a bowler who can bat.

Rashid must play.

But apart from that...

Valiant effort mate as the Odi team is tough to pick. IBut Im going to agree with Keith mainly that Root and Rash have to play. We have no other alternatives. Let's not burden Brook with captaincy yet either imo let him grow into it. Rash has been the only one consistently standing up when we bowl. I'm sure he's at a high of being number 1.

Duckett
Salt/Banton
Root
Brook
Buttler
Smith(w)
Livingstone/Bethell
Carse
Rashid
Wood/Archer
Mahmood

I would love to get another all rounder in instead of Livingstone but I can't think of one and surely he's got to come good sooner than later after all the investment in him. Batters have been letting us down for a while.

I agree with this for Root - if is his fit and willing to play then he plays every game. I struggle to see the logic of leaving one of the worlds best batsmen out of a team, NZ play Williamson in all formats we should do the same. Crawley seems more suited to white ball than tests IMO

Duckett
Buttler
Root
Hain
Brook
Bethell
Smith (WK)
Curran
Rashid
Archer
Mahmood

Squad options - Crawley, Smeed, Potts, Stone, Carse Ahmed, Topley Turner

It’ll never happen but I’d seriously try and persuade Root to take up the captaincy. My personal opinion is he’s a far better fit for the job than Buttler will ever be. Less demanding than the Test job, he’s a guaranteed starter and hopefully be a nice way for him to close out his exceptional career.

I also like the idea of Crawley opening and see that as a good option for him.

Sadly I’ve almost completely lost interest in our white ball side, and the white ball game overall, but FWIW my team would be.
