England make it to a major final

scotch

Striker
despite a lot of average performances.

Cook - So so with the bat but poor and negative captaincy
Bell - keeps throwing his wicket away
Trott - Can't fault
Root - Can't fault
Morgan - Been poor with the bat
Bopara - Big surprise been very good
Buttler- Poor with the bat, good with the gloves
Bresnan- Very poor
Broad -Poor
Tredwell - Very good
Swann- Average and injured
Anderson - Been carrying the seam attack with Ravi
Finn- Undercooked but to be expected.

To make it to a final after 4 games with only half the team performing well takes some doing. Now all it will take is for them to fire in 1 game and we win a major trophy

Broad's figures are 1/35, 0/67, 1/25 and 3/50, aren't the worst.
Bresnan's were 2/45, 0/63 and 2/41

Think you're being a bit harsh on those 2, particularly Bresnan

It comes down to the old cliche that anyone can win a cup competition...... What really matters is the World Rankings - which we're pretty high up too tbf. Its still a bit of a shit competition though. I think ODI cricket is dying, T20 has more excitement more appeal for me. AND this is coming from someone who'd rather watch a Test Match than the shorter format.......

i love the english. headline....make it to a final, first comment is captaincy has been poor lol

Captaincy hasnt been poor, thats a big overstatement. It has certainly been conservative though.

Think selecting Bresnan over Finn when Bresnan's wife is expecting so his mind hasn't been fully focused is a poor decision.

Been very conservative in field settings.

Today he should have been looking to finish SA off with Jimmy bowling all out instead turned to Root and Bopara.

Against Sri Lanka defending 293 he stuck with spread out fields giving them easy singles, when should have been forcing them to take risks by going for boundaries. Granted Sangakarra played brilliantly but stil it was far too easy for them.

New Zealand he lost the plot for their last 10 overs when they started slogging our bowlers.

Almost any game a team loses in this type of cricket you can look at the captain and find all sorts of faults. England have a conservative strategy partly because we don't really have the batsmen to get the sort of totals that allow us to be more attacking with KP being out. It wins us more games than it loses over the last 18 months or so.

We've just stuffed South Africa to get to a major final and all you lot can do is slag them all off. FFS get a life. You lot must be superb players and Captains yourselves.

You seem to have a problem with people expressing an opinion. Perhaps the internet is not for you

Its not so much your opinion. Its just what I would expect from a 2005+ new cricket fan. Against Sri Lanka for example did you expect attacking fields with the bowlers bowling both sides of the wickets and half way down the track? The current England 50 over side have a conservative approach because it is the best approach for them because of the make up of the team. Its not poor captaincy its a good strategy.

I love the way you say what Cook should have done. Give the England team management a ring they are clearly missing a trick.

New Zealand he lost the plot for their last 10 overs when they started slogging our bowlers.

And he brings back Anderson, doesn't get the wickets and is forced to bowl Root and Bopara at the death when the powerplay is on, and gets smashed all over.

And if he brings the field in, Kumara starts to loft them over the top and Cook gets pilloried for giving them easy boundaries.

Can't win.

My only real problem with the team is a lack of power at the top, meaning we can't really go for it during the 1st fielding restrictions. It puts us at a disadvantage immediately, even if we have got away with it in the tournament so far. I would like to see a more flexible batting line up, with the top three mixed in with some power hitters, but other than that you can't really fault what they're doing.

It's a competition that shouldn't be happening, if they'd have secured the finance we'd be playing a Test Match Champions Trophy at the minute.

This is the last 50 over trophy.

20 20 is a farce

It's all well and good the West Indies lads smacking a few sixes in that format but they don't have the skill to construct an innings, not good enough

There are very few one day sides better than England

I believe there are quite a few sides who are all much of a muchness, with England having an advantage in playing at home in swinging conditions just like India would have an advantage playing in the sub continent and so on

Have been pleasantly surprised by the team. Everyone has made a contribution and three players - Anderson, Trott, Root - have been exceptional with Bopara proving me and his many other critics totally wrong.

I know what you mean

But I think England will very rarely get bowled out for a small amount like SA did today.

Trott and the likes will always score runs.

So they will always have a chance of getting a big score if some of the lads get firing further down.

People moan about power in the top 3, it is a fair point, but we are missing KP remember.

People praise the likes of Gayle, but he doesn't real do it in 50 over cricket, not in the last few years anyway.

As Nasser pointed out, Trott has a higher strike rate than a lot of players, including the lieks of Marlon Samuels.

It isn't all about boundaries, some of these powerful players will hit a 6 then there will be 3 dot balls, where the England lads will have three twos and everybody claims they aren't scoring at a good rate.

Agree

Looks like it's going to piss down in Cardiff today, might be a 10 over a side shitfest that gets rid of India.....

Plenty reasons to be cheerful but I still don't like the make-up and balance of the side at all and I think in anywhere other than English conditions we wouldn't have had a sniff of the final with the side we have put out.

I would like to think England management will employ different tactics for different grounds (ie, An Indian flat top, we would launch early then conslidate against spinners?)
