Canny article on BBC Sport about Gus Atkinson

25 year old seamer who bowls similar pace to Josh Tongue.

Any other young players you think could make the step up to the Test team in the coming years? I like the look of Rob Yates at Warwickshire.

I think batsmen we will be fine with in the medium term. The current lads are good and we have plenty of talent who play in the aggrsssive fashion the team wants. We do seem to have lots of bowlers in the 86-88 Sharp caragory but not sure if they have the skill set. Carse is sharp but erratic, Mahmood also and the likes of Atkinson and Tongue need their chance next summer. Big boots to fill especially when Jimmy is also gone but we have to start somewhere. I would be more confident if Robinson and Wood were constantly fit and available rather than possibly relying on more than one of them.

If Robinson is our immediate future then we might struggle. Unfit and would probably still be classed as a trundler in club cricket. England bowlers with the exception of a small handful of proper quicks are all the same. Variation is needed. Left armer would be useful if any kicking around (Luke Wood at Lancs?)

Robinson is an excellent, high quality performer. The most skilful seamer in the country by a mile and when fit and bowling 82+is world class and you need a balance. He has the highest release point in world cricket and gets bounce off a full length. His inability to stay fit is a concern though. Luke Wood us sharp and a lefty - worth a conversation seems to a one day specialist?

Which makes you question his attitude. It seems a general fitness thing as well

I dont feel he is as good as you suggest but happy to have different opinions on it

Robinson is top class tbf. Think his injury before the Ashes really hampered him. He was markedly down on pace from Pakistan before Xmas.

Is Olly Stone constantly injured now? He looked good when he played and pretty sure he made one of the test squads over winter to Pakistan or NZ

I think he’s back fit but another one who has constant fitness issues. When he first came around he was bowling 90plus at times but seems to have settled into that 86-88 bracket. Good but unreliable.

It can’t be a coincidence that 99% of the bowlers we have that can bowl ‘fast’ are injured more often than not.

Archer
Stone
Mahmood
Wood
Both Overtons have had multiple injuries (I think, might just be mixing them both up as one).
Carse

I think Jamie has had more injuries than Craig which fits with the extreme pace always being unfit narrative.

aye he goes quite quickly from looking trim to then a Sarnie away from Fat
I know that feeling : (

I think that's the case with most bowlers in the 90mph+ category. The only one I can think of who wasn't injury prone until right at the end of career was Dale Steyn. What an action that was mind.
