Empty seats at Euro 96

Probably depend on pricing. The likes of Morocco v Iran and Russia v Saudi Arabia wouldn't exactly capture the imagination. A lot would go just to say they've been to a world cup match but if it was like sixty quid they certainly wouldn't be selling out the SoL, would need a hell of a lot of £1 kids tickets. Obviously the big nations would sell tickets, and the latter stages, but many games in the group stage would have empty seats
Agree. No chance those ties are selling out. We'd have big crowds of it were priced right. We'd also get far more neutrals than Russia

Not sure the likes of this game would sell out tbh. Football probably at its peak in 96 mind. It was booming. Especially Newcastle. I'm very surprised at the crowds at their place. Must have been asking fortunes for tickets. 48 team World Cup would have some shocking games too
Tickets weren’t a fortune. It was £25

Price it properly and people will come
I was on holiday in North Wales. My dad was going to bring me and my brother to a game in Anfield. I think it was about £40 for a ticket and there was only certain places you could get tickets. I can't remember if they sold them at ground.

The iron curtain had just fallen and it was the first Euros with 16 teams. Extra games and so called weaker nation would have affected the attendances too.

Remember there was a big fan park near the ground on the old brewery site. More in there than the ground I think.
The teams based up here didn't help, it's not like Bulgaria and Romania had 1000s of fans flooding into the city making a party atmosphere. (If you read mbh's post on the politics forum you would think every city was flooded with them)
It just never really caught the imagination in the the city, don't know anyone that went. I think these days it would sell out.
The rugby World Cup games sold out up here easily enough.

Some of the games were work day afternoon (3pm/4pm) kick off. IIRC you had to buy tickets for all 3 games at newcastle rather than individually.

Pretty shit but the capacity at the shit tip was 36k then.

Ticket prices were expensive paid £45 to go to a at Elland Road - £25 for a game at the Landfill which was the cheapest category.

He probably didn’t complain about bulmanians until after the floodgates opened in 2007.

Aye, I had to buy all 3 even though I was away on holiday for one of the games.....sure it was nigh on 40 quid a ticket which was quite pricey at the time....and I had to take time off work for the others. There were literally a handful of Bulgarian/Romanian fans there, even the French only a couple of thousand there tops.

I remember the games at old trafford and the tons of empty seats, it was on tv , the prices were extremely high

Plus Russia is not the easiest place to get into, whereas England is about the easiest
