Queerside"
Never quite understood the term queer. If I said someone was queer, I’m guessing I’d be shouted down. However it’s used as a recognised term from people of that persuasion. That is a fantastic name for a LGBT bar in Sunderland
I'm the same mate, I thought it was a slur... But in recent years it's seemingly become an acceptable term. At a guess, I'd say its an attempt to reclaim the word from bigots and take the sting out of it when use as an attempted slurNever quite understood the term queer. Sick of this gay rights stuff being shoved down our throats. Let’s hope there’s a straight pride one in the West Stand.
Makem?I'm the same mate, I thought it was a slur... But in recent years it's seemingly become an acceptable term. At a guess, I'd say it’s an attempt to reclaim the word.
I'm hoping it's a Whoosh likeJesus Christ.

Broadly speaking, DH1 is right. It's about reclaiming the word to take the abusive power out of it and claim your own power from itI’ve no idea where to stand with it, one of those where just best to avoid it and leave it to those who have the right to use it
Thought that might be the case, although far more nuanced than can be explained on a message boardBroadly speaking, DH1 is right. It's about reclaiming the word to take the abusive power out of it and claim your own power from it
Ha, agreed. It's the sort of word I wouldn't really use if not from that community but can see the logic in them reclaiming. There are obvious parallels with certain racial wordsThought that might be the case, although far more nuanced than can be explained on a message board
I was thinking the same (both about not using it and about the parallel about a particular racial word)Ha, agreed. It's the sort of word I wouldn't really use if not from that community but can see the logic in them reclaiming. There are obvious parallels with certain racial words
Queer
Nah its funny.. Tbf I haven't seen the thread so wouldn't have knownI know, there is a long thread currently debating the term “makem” for the umpteenth time.
I saw a correlation between the claiming of a derogatory term for general use to diffuse the effect in both “queer” and “makem”.
Never as funny when a joke is explained tho![]()
