Dylan McGeouch

He just has very little positive effect on the game. The problem with McGeouch is simple for me. People are trotting out names of defensive midfielders from teams at the top end of the Premier League. Unlike McGeouch those players are surrounded by very good attacking players, goal scorers and assist makers who allow the likes on Kante to be fairly one deminsional, win the ball, pass it square or backwards.

Dylan McGeouch is in an average player, in an average team that doesn't possess brilliant attacking players. That makes him look negative, simply passing the buck to other average players. He can be sharp on his day, winning the ball, decent first touch, recycling the ball. Yesterday he was awful.

Against Oxford I was looking for any player to go the extra mile, make a run into space, offer themselves for the ball, have a dribble or a shot. Basically make things happen in the final third. McGeouch will never be that man.

Cattermole was that man several times last season, driving forward, out of his comfort zone, his normal defensive game and scoring a few goals.

That is a proper team player, standing up to be counted when the going gets tough.

Or you could just play your normal game and pass the ball 5 yards square...

McGeouch was awful yesterday, totally anonymous first half.

Some good points here, although I disagree about your Oxford assessment. He got on the ball and actually looked to make things happen. One of only three games I've seen McGeouch do that in his Sunderland career.

If people still aren't getting it, McGeouch doesn't need to assist and score, so long as he's contributing to attacks that lead to chances being created. That means getting the ball to our more creative players. So far he's not even doing that.

In fact, possibly the best thing about his play so far is that him keeping the ball means the opposition can't score.

People have compared McGeouch to Makelele, completely failing to appreciate that Makelele had a superb defensive aspect to his game, which was one of the main things that made him great.

He keeps the ball and plays in a similar position so must be Makelele lite

Makele couldn't hit a cross field pass like that of McGeochs vs Oxford.

It’s not difficult to pass the ball, albeit crisply, backwards or sideways at a maximum length of around 10 yards to a teammate. If any pro footballer can’t do that then they have a problem.

Well maybe you should speak to our defenders then as they are giving possession away like it’s going out of fashion!

I also watched the Heerenveen game and watched Leadbitter try 30/40 yard balls for the first 20 minutes which just gave them the ball and allowed them to attack!

You say that any competent footballer should be able to do it, well if that is the case why do clubs like Chelsea (Kante), Man Utd (Matic), Man City (Fernandinho) pay so much money for playes who in essence (but at a much higher quality) do exactly what you have just described?

It's because those that dont, dont understand football on a higher level like those that do. Fact.

You're a fine one to talk, you rated Altidore.

I'd have no problem with this type of play if he done what you say and looked up and looked forward to find those players himself, but too often he recycles the ball for the sake of it and passes it back to the back 3/4 you speak of, leaving them with the decision of either clearing the ball / passing forward making it a fight for possession or being brave in possession and starting moves themselves on the ground. Often he's putting players not as comfortable in possession in situations where they have to play the ball, rather than do it himself.

It boils down to options available to him in possession, if there is no movement and we are standing with our fingers up our backsides, I’d prefer him to retain possession and go backwards as appose to hitting a ball aimlessly forward and giving the opposition the ball.

Kante pops up everywhere and Fernandinho's the best forward passer mid-to long there is

Back to McGeouch, he pretty much has to play; keeps Leadbits at bay and Power is crud.

Well I think you’re completely wrong, I think he is has ability to hold possession and and does not turn possession over cheaply. I’ve watched our back 3/4 turn possession over time and time again against both Oxford and Ipswich yet this lad is always offers an outlet and can retain the ball allowing them to push up the field and get back into position.

He can't make a telling pass. He passes easy 5 yard balls which forces the next person to make a more positive pass and they give it away. He's a coward.

How long did that take you to rake through my posting history?

Coward? Jesus mate that’s a bit heavy!!! he retains possession and doesn’t lash balls aimlessly forwards handing the opponent the ball. I can clearly see you don’t rate him and that’s fine, but I think he brings something to the team at the minute so this is always going to be a bone of contention with the vast majority of people on here.

It's almost as if a Flannagan esc ball to their keeper or for a throw is the better option. Its staggering that the majority would prefer to lose possession than keep it.

😂😂😂 that’s my point in a roundabout way!🙈 McGeouch is not in the same planet as those kids I mentioned but like it or not he displays some of the attributes that those players have. He is at the moment the best deep lying midfielder we have, he can retain possession and tries to offer an option to the defenders when they attempt to move the ball out from the back.

I don’t think he’s quite as bad as made out by the OP but I certainly don’t see the midfielder some see. He’s a bit one dimensional for me and can’t really get about the pitch.
Not a starter for me - power is a much better player alongside leadbitter or o nein.

I already think Dobson looks our best midfielder. He's the best tackler and in the air. His passing is decent and he makes good forward runs. Very promising start to his Sunderland career. Up to the rest to battle to play alongside him.

This in a nutshell really, because he’s not deemed as dynamic and able to do 40 yard bursts upfield and score 10 goals a season people think he’s shite, the fact he keeps the ball better than any other player we currently have is overlooked! blows my mind!
