Durham v Leicestershire 2nd XI

Here's the team they should be picking:

Lees
Bancroft
Borthwick*
Bedingham
Burnham
Eckersley+
Carse
Trevaskis
Raine
Woods/Potts
Rushworth

You then have Salisbury competing for a seamer slot, Coughlin challenging Carse for the all-rounder slot and Poynter challenging for the wicket keeper slot. You also obviously have the likes of Dickson, Clarke and Jones challenging for batting positions.

The only controversial issue is the length of the tail. However you effectively have four bowling all-rounders between Eckersley and Rushworth which will be collectively better than 7-10 for most counties. The additional bowling depth also allows Carse to bowl shorter, more aggressive bursts and retain some energy for batting.

I don't think anyone other than James Franklin and chops would disagree with this.
We are all entitled to opinions.....BUT, the only opinion that counts is that of James Franklin. He knows the players better than any of us !

Thanks for that nugget of obviousness. He's getting the selection wrong though.
Good win, always nice to know you have decent back up in the seconds, also means that those in the firsts know they need to perform to keep their place.

Trevaskis match figures 17 overs, 8 maidens, 7 wickets for 18 runs.

So you are a better qualified, more experienced coach than Franklin and you know the players better than him ?

Nice use of the appeal to authority fallacy.

Do you think Phil Parkinson picked the best team for Sunderland? After all, he's more qualified than you or I, so we aren't allowed to criticise, using your logic.

I just love so called fans, of any sport, who think they know more than experienced, qualified head coaches/managers. Brilliant !
Why criticise ? Why not support and trust ?

Its a discussion forum. Sometimes you may read opinions you disagree with. Don't like it, don't read it.

And you're a hypocrite. A quick search shows you described the signing of Dickson as a "kneejerk by Franklin".

You say he keeps on getting selection wrong ?
Durham are sitting 3 points behind the Champions of the last 2 seasons with a game in hand. I did not expect that at all. Imagine if he consulted the fans, before every game, then selected his side ?
I am over the moon at the way we are playing in a very competetive division, so I support and trust. He is a better Head Coach than you and me.

Mind I would hope Borthwick has the final say on the XI he leads into the field.

In any walk of life, decision makers can be so close to the action that they can't make objective judgements. It 's entirely logical to argue that there is a need for a variation from relentless seam on the last day and an economical spin bowler is utilised to offer that option. Franklin is not omnipotent - the signing of both Coughlin and Dickson would indicate that. Members pay their money, last season for no return, they're entitled to their opinion and entitled to express it.
Franklin is an entirely unproven head coach.

If he'd picked the team recommended above we'd be top of the group as we would have won at least one of Notts, Derbyshire or Essex games where lack of bowling depth and variety cost us the win and their tail put on big runs (happened again against Worcestershire but the wicket was a bit spicier).

Just because he gets eight out of ten calls right doesn't preclude us from questioning the two he gets wrong. He's done a great job on the whole but needs to pack in the obsession with one or two players who show nothing to warrant selection.

As I said, you questioned his signing of Dickson. Alright for you to criticise but not others....?

Might as well shut the forum down, we're only fans so not entitled to an opinion.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and entitled to express it, subject to law. We are all guilty, at times, of going over the top.
However, supporters support their team and criticisers criticise at any opportunity, there is a difference.
Durham are playing very well at the moment, in a very competetive group. Franklin is in his 3rd year as a "head coach".
Yet there are still people that think he is picking the wrong players !
Support and Trust !

So those who feel Trevaskis would add more to the team than poynter or that potts has done more than coughlin to deserve a start this year aren't supporters, they're critics? I mean that's madness.

I think we all think we're having aa good season and doing a good job overall but there's always areas we can improve and suggesting positive moves we could make is hardly beyond the pale

1. You aren't the moderator of this forum. You don't get to say what goes.
2. It's a non-affiliated cricket discussion forum. Some here aren't Durham fans. All aspects of cricket will inevitably be discussed. The ground is where you 'support'.
3. You're being a hypocrite as you have criticised some of Franklin's decisions in the past as a quick search shows.

Just to answer your points
1. You are right, I am not the moderator and I do not "say what goes".
2. You support your team in the ground....yes I agree, but you support on public forums like this as well.
3. You got me here ! Yes I ONCE criticised a decision of Franklin, not "SOME" decisions as you say. BUT...I got better, and I am not a criticiser any more. I let the professionals get on with their jobs and support them as much as I can.

An internet discussion forum is for discussion not support. The clue is in the name.

A search of your posting record shows you've also been critical of Durham's slip fielding, the quality of Durham's spinners, Marcus North's responsiveness to emails, the number of coaches DCCC send to matches, Ben Raine's batting positionand England selection. Why not "trust and support?" 🤣🤔
