Durham v Lancs (h) Bob Willis Trophy

Very disappointed with Cameron Steel genuinely believed he would kick on but he isn't. His place in the side surely is vulnerable and Burnham is absolutely desperate for a score. Utterly depressing stuff

I know it’s depressing but these opposition teams are a division above. Lancs didnt lose a game last season.

give the players a bit of leeway, as this season is basically a write off

21 for 4. Sack them all

This season's playing squad must be the weakest since 95 time at start of Life down by the Riverside ?🤔

Agreed. I think Lees is a decent opener and Eckersley isn't a bad option at 7, but otherwise the batting line-up is dross. Steel is a disappointment, he's just not kicked on.

Bowling line-up is fine but as usual we have no decent spin option and too reliant on Rushy.

It's sad to see DCCC in decline like this. I was a member in the early days (pre-Riverside) but have sort of drifted away from the County Game (other than following the scores) due to a lack of free time.

Is this all related to the ECB "bail out" and subsequent relegation/points deduction? DCCC lost a lot of good players after that happened. Are they still financially strapped, or just unable to attract good players?

Think it mainly stems to being done over the the ECB. Division 2 clubs will always struggle to attract talent if they aren't throwing money about. We probably got lucky in that there was a conveyor belt of local talent coming through the academy in the 2000's and that's dropped off a bit. These things can go through cycles but ultimately it becomes more difficult to nurture talent in a losing environment and even more difficult to hold on to better talent when better money and standard is elsewhere.

Suppose it doesn't help when your 2 best players are centrally contracted and (practically) never play for the club

Pretty much all of the above TC.

The FTECB punishments affected us for two years ‘on paper’ but I think it’s become apparent it’s more like a ten year sentence when you factor in the domino effect of everything that came with it.

Having said that, I was very optimistic that we could mount a serious promotion challenge this year. What’s happened of course has cancelled any chance of that but I’m still hopeful that next year will be a big improvement when you consider the (IMO) shrewd additions the club have made since last year.

No point getting carried away about these last two games, we’re playing against two sides who are a division above us for a start, as I’ve said elsewhere: I just hope the coaches and the backroom staff don’t resort to any knee jerk decisions between now and next April.

Losing Stoneman, Borthwick and Jennings was massive, half of the batting line up, all home grown, all around England honours all gone. When he found his feet, Bancroft was a good signing, Lees looks to be recapturing old form but we seem to have tried to bring players in who haven't been up to it. The big problem is that since Jennings, who's now 28, who have we brought through in the batting line up who's really nailed down a place? I know we've always done better with quicks than batsmen which is understandable given the wicket but the lack of batsmen development is a concern. I still fancy our bowlers to do alright but they're rarely given anything to work with.

And two of the best 3/4 players around the time of the ‘shafting’ (Stoneman & Borthwick) left for money and opportunities that were unlikely (in their eyes) whilst at Division Two level.
