Durham v Kent (h) C.C. ( 3/4/26)

Sick of being negative but I need to see some improvement to convince me this team is anything other than bottom half material. Other than Potts' bowling, none of the issues that got us relegated seem to have been addressed. Our batsmen, aside from Gay, are in the same poor form, and we are dependent on Potts and Raine to conjure a miracle with the ball. Roach looks over the hill as I feared, toothless and expensive. Codi Yusuf would have been a better signing.
BBC says we were behind the over rate, why did we shake hands? Might aswel have put spinners on both ends to get back level
Ackerman at both ends?

Graham Clark leggies (doesnt mckinney bowl part time spin?)might have helped getting the over rate down for the last few overs or so

Might be worth waiting more than one game to completely give up on them mind.

Plenty of positives from this game for me, had yesterdays debacle not have occurred we’d have piled on the runs and been defending 450> in over 100 overs - I’m absolutely certain of that.

I’m also fairly certain we’ll have got back to ‘the right side’ of the over rate, otherwise we wouldn’t have shaken hands.

Got to discard the top coat for the first time this season which was something.... The fact that we seem to be unable to take twenty wickets in a game sadly is no suprise.....Our catching was pretty woeful throughout the game....Robinson and Ackermann are simply walking wickets....I'll give Roach the benefit of the doubt as this was his first game but his numerous no balls needs to be addressed....Gay batted superbly in the first innings...Potts looked more like his old self....Raine was Mr Reliable as ever...Aldridge looks more of a batter than a bowler.... and the ground is an absolute tip.

It's not really "after one game" when, as I pointed out, it's a concern about continuation of player form from the fourteen matches last season. Who are your match winners in our side on current form?

You started your post by saying ‘you need to see improvement’. By that metric, I’m simply saying that you need to give the team more chance than one game to judge whether they’ve improved or not. It’s a new season, in a new division with several new faces in the side. Like I say, I’m willing to be a little more patient than Week 1 to write them off.

I also don’t think you can speak of ‘current form’ by lumping this in with all of last season - they’ve had a break of around 6 months between games.

We have several match winners in our side, they weren’t able to get the job done today, but I’m hopeful we’ll see some of it in the coming weeks.
How do we boost our wicket taking options if Potts or Raine go down we are in big trouble.

I was impressed by Aldridge in the first innings, not so much today, but then he did have a drop in the slips and a very good lbw shout (it was plumb) turned down. If either of those go his way it’s a different game. As the day wore on he looked leggy, but that’s to be expected given his inexperience.

As a general point though, if any team lost their main two bowlers you could argue they’d be in the same predicament that you speak of.

Robinson's keeping wasn't great either. He let one from Potts go straight through him for four.

Apparently he's on a contract that guarantees selection if fit.
There seemed to be issues with the sun being low later today. Was it during then?

Potts doing 'too well' could be catastrophic if the England selectors, whoever and wherever they may be, sit up and notice. Maybe that he is taking wickets in the second division may mean he is passed over.

I hope they leave Potts alone I think they got in his head trying to make him bowl quicker.

That's the best he's bowled in a while for us looked in great rhythm long may it continue.
This utter obsession with pace drives me nuts. Yes it is important, but an attack needs balance.

Potts consistently bowled low to mid-80s with great skill. When he first started playing for England in 2022 he looked great and was getting players like Kane Williamson out.

England take control of his development and he goes backwards. There is zero point trying to make somebody into something they aren’t.

Kind of reminds me when Troy Colley tried to remodel Anderson's action to prevent future injury.

I am huge fan of Potts but even at his very best not sure he's an automatic test bowler but a lot more chance bowling like this
