Just announced on twitter for first 4 County Championship games of the season.

Durham County Cricket Club is delighted to confirm that Aiden Markram will join the club for the beginning of the 2018 Specsavers County Championship season.

The South Africa international opener, who recently captained his country during the Proteas’ ODI fixture against India earlier this month, will arrive at Emirates Riverside in time for Durham’s opening home Championship fixture against Kent and will stay until the start of the Royal London One Day Cup in the middle of May.

Markram, who captained South Africa to Under-19 World Cup success in 2014, saw his impressive form with South Africa ‘A’ rewarded with a full Test call-up during the England series last summer but would make his debut against Bangladesh in September, scoring 97 in his first innings.

The 23-year-old added back-to-back centuries in his second & third Tests, against Bangladesh & Zimbabwe, before adding a classy 94 during the series win over India. After six Tests, his average stands at a lofty 52.

New Zealand international Tom Latham, who spent a successful summer with Durham last season, will take over the South African’s opening spot in time for the white ball format and will also captain Durham’s RL50 campaign.

Following his positive impact at Emirates Riverside, Latham confirmed his class this winter with a brilliant unbeaten century in the Black Caps’ One-Day International series against India & featured in his country’s home series wins against West Indies & Pakistan.

Durham are also investigating different player options for their 2018 Vitality Blast campaign.

Durham County Cricket Club Chairman, Sir Ian Botham OBE, said: “We’re delighted to have both Aiden and Tom at Emirates Riverside this season and I am confident they will both contribute to what we hope will be a successful season.

“Aiden offers confidence and maturity at the top of the batting order and despite being just 23-years-old, he has already been recognised by South Africa as a leader in the dressing room.

“It’s great news that we will have Aiden at the beginning of our Championship campaign, especially with Tom Latham, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood all missing due to their international and IPL commitments.

“We’re delighted to welcome Tom back to Chester-le-Street and I’m excited to see him captain the RL50; he has a wealth of international experience and brings exceptional batting, fielding and leadership skills into the dressing room.”

He's not at IPL nor have Kiwis any fixtures afaia so he must want a break after the England series. He'll have been playing all year up until our season starts.
Markham averages 52 in tests and 47 in 1st class.
Looks like he has the numbers for a good player ..... but UK/CLS in early season will be a challenge.

So is Latham only playing 50 over?
No Markram (first 4 CC games) is cover for Latham as he isn't here for the first 4 games. No IPL contract or NZ fixtures so im guessing he just wants a short break as he has been playing non stop for over a year iirc.

Chuffed Latham will be returning. Top player in all formats. Hopefully the SA lad will come up trumps sounds like he’s from good stock.

Says on Cricinfo that we are looking to make further overseas signings for the T20 which sounds positive

Good signing.

Not sure if anyone else agrees but I'd rather we focus on a overseas player who can play the whole year, and can really help with the culture of the dressing room.

Obviously like Benks and MDV did. But more recently Hastings

I know they don't grow in trees like.

Agree 100% and in fairness that's what the club have done with Latham and Rimmington for this year - must have come to pass recently however that Latham can't come for the start, but he will be here from May onwards all being well.

Latham is leaving mid-August.
We’re still looking at the option of a second player for the T20 competition and the period after that finishes, there’s a lot of Championship cricket to be played after that. Whether that be one player who could fulfil both of those roles or two different players, we’re in discussions with a few players at the moment and hopefully we can get something across the line in the next few weeks,” he said.

“We’ve got a few guys who are looking to trial, a few bowlers and maybe one or two batters, but the thing with a small squad is the ability to have a good look at trialists. We’ll be doing that through pre-season and into the start of the season.”

Sounds like we are looking at a few more players aswell. I wont hold my breath like.

Not sure I'd bother signing a lad just for the 20/20
Aye im more concerned about getting another player in to play all formats. Nick Compton has been told he isnt being picked for Middlesex this season apparently.

Me too, but the club probably feel it's worth a punt in order to get more revenue from the T20 tournament. Mind after the franchise announcement, it wouldn't surprise me if clubs just said fuck it and played the kids.

Compton is a great player still, but I really don't see him coming up here. Probably go to Kent or somewhere else down there.
