Donald on our January budget

Puts todays results in perspective. We're making do. Its possible we may have to have a consolidation season or two before we start thinking of promotion, but our league position at the moment is still encouraging enough to at least give us some hope.

We're financially fucked unless we get up, and financially struggling even if we do.

We have to get rid of Ovideo, Catts, N'Dong and Djilibodji. Simple as that.

Why is it an absolute disaster?

Hasn’t he already said they want to run it financially without the parachute payments so it is self sustainable should the worst happen and we don’t get back up?

@Grumpy Old Man might comment, sure he was posting about it

Grumpy Old Man is just back in Bristol and knackered but ....

There is literally no point in setting up a wage structure which relies on the parachute payment this season to keep us viable.

Our income will fall by £20m next season, irrespective of whichever division we're in, and between a further £7m (Championship) or £15m (L1) the season after that, unless we're promoted back to the PL. Not cutting back to the sustainable wage level now is just postponing the inevitable, and, to be honest, now is the best time to do it.

I have no problems whatsoever with what they're trying to do. Frankly, it's the first piece of rational financial management we've seen from this club in a decade.

The boy Juan can bankroll our promotion if it is in any doubt come January. Would be a bigger disaster if we spend another year in this shocking league. Get promoted or go bust trying

This is why Sartori is here right now I reckon. If we’re lingering around top 8, looking vulnerable, needing additions, we can hopefully call on him for a loan.

Hopefully we’re top 3, a few points ahead of everyone else.

Satori will take a bigger percentage, or even buy the club outright I reckon.

Sartori told me to my face before Charlton game that he's put "very little money in this season" but if we go up to Championship "big things will be happening" His own words.

Impression I got from talking to him was that he will be running the show. IMO Stewart Donald won't be in charge for a long time. I think deal already in place for Sartori to take full control.

Thats fair enough and what hes said from the start
This

Also I have thought and said all along that the high earners need to go to move us quickly towards sustainability.
At least we have got two of them that are playing regularly for the team, which should help that.
As for the other four- God only knows but it isn't a rosey prospect by any manner of means.

Inflating in size every week is that word.
I honestly don't care.

Having Sunderland back as the fans club, with local lads wearing the shirt with pride means more to me.

When did this stop then? Just out of curiosity....

I don’t use the word hate often, except to describe cancer, because it’s a strong word, but I’m seriously verging on using it to describe these two parasites.

Just horrible characters, I don't care that they don't want to be here, but their attitude f***ing stinks, they seem to think they deserve their over inflated wages. Hate both of the bastards

He did also say...

"We’ve got to get ourselves into a position whereby if Jack needs something in January we are in a position to do it. There is going to be some work needed in January to make sure that happens."

Some of the legacy payments are ridiculous, he mentions having to write a cheque to Everton recently for Darron Gibson.

Was it for his bar bill?

Not sure why that would make you laugh. I’m under no illusion as to his views about them, why would you question that

I think he was laughing at how SD felt about them, which reflects our feelings, not at you

Which is exactly the right thing to do. However on previous podcast he seemed to be suggesting they weren’t spending to go into the funds for next year.
Now it seems on the face of it that we have very little left.
Given we are going to take a big cut in revenue next year even if we get promoted what’s the plan? Self sufficiency with no parachute payments in the championship has rarely if ever led to success in recent years.

Burnley managed it, play the kids, some of them look good. I am happy they are getting a chance

Burnley didn’t manage it, but they are probably the best example of how to go about it.
I am happy with it for now, but probably won’t be if in another 3/4 seasons we are languishing about in league one/bottom half of championship. We have already seen a few of our better youngsters being picked off that’s only going to increase. We would have to perform miracles to be doing better than mid table championship while remaining self sufficient.

Not sure about that mind, you seem to be advocating spending money we haven't got again which I don't want to see us do at any level. If Juan puts money in, we owe Juan money. Same as we did to Ellis.

There's no reason why SAFC can't be successful and profitable in the championship and league one but it means we have to work really hard. We have to be better than those clubs around us both as a business (generating revenue, sponsorships and cutting costs) and as a football team (progressing young players, good old fashion coaching and scouting). We could learn from the clubs at this level who've been doing that for years, like the Fleetwood's and Oxford's.

Anyway, it's time the club stopped this trend of bringing 10+ players in and out in every transfer window as it never turns out well. It wouldn't bother me if we sold the big earners and just kept the rest of the squad together in January. Securing the future of the younger players would do for me.
