McCarthy - did well in the Championship but was let down by Murray refusing to release funds

Newcastle's troubled season hit a new low yesterday when Sir Bobby Robson's condemnation of the team's disgruntled supporters was brought to light across Tyneside.


The Newcastle manager turned on the Toon Army between post-match television interviews following the damaging 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, when his players were booed off the pitch. Supporters then left St James' Park in their tens of thousands as a lap of honour beckoned.


Robson's outburst - in which he unfavourably contrasted his players' subdued end-of-season reception with the tumultuous send-off Leeds enjoyed a day earlier - made front and back page news in Newcastle yesterday.


The Evening Chronicle's main headline screamed 'Backlash' while its back page added 'Sir Bobby in TV gaffe'.


According to the newspaper, Robson "didn't realise the cameras were still rolling after he gave a TV interview and condemned the supporters".

Robson's remarks were, though, transmitted to screens around the stadium, including the boardroom and corporate boxes.

The Tyne-Tees TV presenter, Ian Payne, with whom Robson was talking, leapt to his defence. Payne said: "His comments were off the record and have to be taken in context. He is very passionate and the atmosphere was highly charged.

"He was still fired up and I was the first person he spoke to. It was an off-the-record discussion that was transmitted on the club CCTV system. I have to clear up that he did not swear about the Newcastle fans."

Yesterday Robson hinted at his dissatisfaction with the way his players had been treated after the Wolves game, stating: "What frustrates me is that every time we don't win, people suggest we haven't fought hard enough, that we haven't had enough drive or tenacity, but that's not fair on the players.

"I've refused to harp on about it, but after what's been a long and - at times - a difficult season, we've had half a team missing in recent weeks and we have to stand by the players who are in the side. We're called Newcastle United. We've got an important few days coming up and that's how we should be - united. We have to stick together."

However, despite the reports, Robson insisted he would never reproach the supporters. "I've been a Newcastle supporter for 60 years, since as long as I can remember and probably longer than half of the public who were in the stadium on Sunday," he said.

"I would never criticise them, never. How could I, when I am one of them myself? When the team loses a game or isn't doing as well as it could be, then it hurts me as much as anybody and possibly more."

Robson must now prepare his sixth-placed team for key matches at Southampton tomorrow and Liverpool on Saturday. Two victories would secure fourth place in the Premiership and qualification to the Champions League.

However, Newcastle have not won a League game at Southampton since the 1972-73 season and Robson has never won at Anfield in his managerial career.

I think you've cleared up the misconception you have been under.

The vile songs SAFC sang about SBR are however beyond dispute. Shameful.

Don't be such a snivelling hypocrite .......... that's our job ffs, we're Sunderland.

It's expected that we boo anything B&W although it was hard with Robson.
He's everything that Newcastle, and some of the fans, can never be ............ dignified, correct and with a sense of realism.

Were there any protests from Newcastle fans when he was sacked?

If a Mag manager was sacked now, with the club in a smiliar position, you wouldn't be able to see the ground for fat-bellied chavs with their mam's bedsheets.

But, when Robson was kicked out, you all swallowed the mountain of shite you were fed about the job being one of the biggest in WORLD football :eek:

As for the SBR arguement, why do you think he spent his final years watching Sunderland and not Newcastle even though he was a Newcastle fan?

Lady Elsie said that Sir Bobby loved coming to the Stadium of Light as he was really looked after by Quinny.

The most sickening thing about SBR's passing was the way Newcastle, and their fans, attempted to make themselves the centre of attention ............ this, despite him winning nothing with Newcastle and spending much more of his time elsewhere.

He left other clubs with his dignity, and his head held high, but was thrown out of Newcastle and the fans should be ashamed of the way their club handled it.

I was really worried when Robson was there .......... a proven winner, knew the game inside out and was able to get players by snapping his fingers.
I'm much more comfortable with Alan Pardew :lol:

The only hypochracy is that your supporters then denied this and argued that he had suddenly became (in fact some argued had always been) a Sland supporter, never attended SJP anymore and had always been welcome at SOL (by the supporters, not the club).

The treatment SBR received from NUFC was from FF & the players, the treatment he received from SAFC was from the supporters. Shame he had to die before you could bring yourselves to sing his name.

I have Mag family in Chopwell and I know what was being said at the time. I also watched Look North and read the local press. I was an adult at the time which I suspect you weren't.
I think you're just repeating what you've been told.

You're just attempting to rewrite history and failing badly.

Not sure if you could be anymore wrong to be fair and the most hypocritical aspect of this whole saga is how he was hounded out of the club and basically treat like shite, which after his death, was followed up by the sickening approach of the club and a lot of its fans in proclaiming him a true jawdee hero who received unconditional support from the jawdee nayshun

Face it you treat the bloke like shite then tried to bury history in your approach to his death.....pathetic

Aye mate it was truly sickening how NUFC allowed their stadium to become a shrine to SBR.
Should have opened the SOL and anyone leaving tribute could hear the ghostly sounds of thousands of mackems chanting "Robsons nearly dead ...." or "There's only one senile bastard..." or "Robsons pissed his pants..." from derby games of yore.
