Diarra out till December

It's likely that he will be picked since they can name a squad of 28 players. Even if there's only an outside chance of him being half-fit for the knockouts after Xmas they can afford to pick him and still have enough cover with the larger squad.
FIFA will only cover the wages of 23 players, so if they take 27 the Senegalese FA will have to pay the wages of several players. Maybe they literally can’t afford to pick him in the hope that he becomes match fit during the tournament.

Senegal was due to announce squad on the 4th but has delayed it as the coach was at WC draw. So suspect it will be announced over the next couple of days and everybody will be put out of their misery. Matches are on 23rd, 27th and 30th December, I would be surprised given Diarra has been out 3 months if he is called up having not played a minute. Whatever happens it will be agreed between the club, player and Senegal so no point in worrying about it. We probably haven't even seen the best of him yet and won't until New Year back end of January there is no way Senegal are going to get the best out of him over the next 3 weeks, but it will depend on the coaches mindset as if he calls him up we have no say really.
Since Wissa was not in his countries squad and played yesterday

Would be strange if Diarra was picked with no game time

They've added a few photos of training and he's not in any of them so far i don't think, not on the ones last week aswell?
Who is ‘they’ Senegal?

Are they photos of their squad training for AFCON? If so they he wouldn’t have gone to them yet anyway would he?

Shame for the lad then but you’d think if he’s not even training yet that he won’t be going to AFCON.
I doubt he will be playing for us whilst the tournament is on but at least we can manage his rehab properly and not throw him in before he’s ready out of desperation to stay in the tournament

Habib Diarra, Aji Alese and Ahmed Abdullahi continue their own respective rehabilitation programmes

What the fuck is wrong with Abdullahi now? Signed 16 months ago, never made the matchday squad and has played a handful of 21s games.

Depends on his fitness etc. If December is targeted as his return, then I could see him not being fit enough for an international tournament but fine for some bench and 10 min appearances for us over the coming weeks

This is the best case scenario from a completely selfish standpoint. We get to manage his return and ease him back into the team, lowering the risk of him picking up an injury. Hopefully have him playing at his best for the second half of the season ready for the World Cup.
