Good post. Just because it was the best option at home with 10 men for 60 mins against Villa doesn’t mean it’s the best option now Diarra is out
We may well see it, but for different reasons
Getting Ballard in with Mukiele's throws is a potential weapon. Mukiele and Alderete are likely comfortable either side of central defence. Maybe all three are decent in one on one situations as well - because unless you're playing defensive wingbacks they're going to have to be comfortable being pulled into wide areas and isolated at times, will they then still have the same level of collective strength they appear to have now though?
But then you start looking at wingbacks and who is suited and also midfield and who is tasked with helping out now you can't easily double up down that side and if they're suited to it physically- like Xhaka and how that potentially changes our patterns of play.
It's not as simple as dumping an extra forward in like some think and an extra centre half - we've spent over a year now breaking quickly after turning over possesion and the wingers have played a big part in the build up play. Whilst you want to be able to change things I don't think we should be changing the whole system just to get Ballard's aerial prowess in. As much as I like him he'll probably be injured after 4 or 5 games again anyway
