Diarra out till December

Hard to tell when playing against 10 men, always going to look defensive. Just think the threat of Ballard is a huge swing and you cannot really drop Mukiele or Alderete. Then our wingers haven’t really stood out yet, so with Diarra news, we have to be flexible. 4 at the back will be used most times but for the foreseeable don’t think it’s our best option.

I very much doubt we'll play 3 at the back as it'll leave gaps down the sides or we'll end up being defensive anyway. I can't even see how it's close to being our best option. Then also how do you operate with the likes of Xhaka? He'd then be expected to cover some of those gaps in the wider areas and moving him into areas he's more likely to be exposed im is going to isolate him occasionally and take him away from the areas we need him giving us what he can on the ball.

We've spent over a year with 4 at the back, we've always been able to go to a 442 out of possession, which is pretty straoght forward to get players to adapt and fit into and due to how we're set up our wingers are never reply going to have the support or flexibility around them, at this level, to stand out.

People are getting carried away because of how we adapted at home to Villa and how we tried to take advanted of set pieces as they were our best option at that point. but any 352 type formation we would use would always be limited by a lack of freedom in certain roles and would require a level of ball retention that we've not managed to display yet to make it work. It would come with more pitfalls and leave more gaps than anything positive we would gain from it.

Good post. Just because it was the best option at home with 10 men for 60 mins against Villa doesn’t mean it’s the best option now Diarra is out

We may well see it, but for different reasons

there's no way go to back 3, you are relying on same 3 players being fit and not suspended, ie there's a good chance will have to change back to a back 4.
