what an inspiring bunch who all went onto great things at Bristol and beyond.

Wonder if Congerton was involved.

I dont have a view on McInnes, Ill give him a chance.

Im really worried that we have learned precisely nothing from previous mistakes. No worldwide search for the best man, no starting off with a set of criteria, no sign of a proper recruitment process.

Just an owner who has got every decision wrong in 7 years, based on hunches, contacts, and chance meetings, asking his CEO, with a decidedly dodgy track record, if he knew anyone who could recommend someone, so the CEO asks a bloke he used to work with, who was himself a total failure at a similar club to ours, and he comes back with the name of someone he was recommending for his old job.

If this appointment works it will be by chance, not because the people in charge have learned anything about running a football club.

It'll be 2 Jocks getting a fellow Jock a high profile job in England. Like you say, if it works it's purely by chance. I don't think it will. I don't have any confidence in us selecting the right candidate.

This what I'm worried about. Martin Bain was an ex-CEO at Rangers with Walter Smith and Smith is recommending one of his ex-players and fellow Scot. We don't seem to want to think outside the box.

Do you think Bain would rather help out another Scotsman get a good job just because he's Scottish or his mate rather than do what he thinks will give the club the best chance of success under the restrictions which it finds itself? He's got more to gain from his managerial appointment and the club doing well than anyone. I can't imagine he'd jeopardise it just to help his countrymen infiltrate the pesky English oppressors.

One thing I hope we have learned from is getting a manager in 3 weeks before the season starts is the recipe for disaster. We need to get someone in asap. We may have 15 first squad players leaving - I know we want to make the right appointment but haste is required like never before - it would be lovely to have a worldwide search but we don't have that luxury. The past week on this board shows that no matter what the club do it will be wrong.

My main criteria:
Can he say something positive?
Can he play more than one formation?
Will he tell us to expect to be in a relegation battle five minutes after he's through the door?
Will he buy loads of geriatric players from Aberdeen?

Well, duh

Another point of view could be that he's a Rangers man as is Walter Smith. Poaching the Aberdeen manager would benefit Rangers more than anyone else. Looking at his last championship club I fail to see how McInnes could be seen as a good appointment for a club like us.

Copied from afc-chat. It's incredible the arrogance some cash from Sky can give you lot.

They think having millions to spend makes them a big club. It doesn't. It gives fans like theirs the belief they can compete when in fact they just can't. The difference is that we are doing better in our league than they are in theirs. We also qualify for Europe and have beaten some pretty decent teams these last few years. Sunderland can only dream of doing that. It doesn't mean our league is shite, it just means they are shite in their own league setup. The money SKY throws at the premier league and what they throw at scotish football is relative to the success teams have.

We are classed as a pub league because we aren't as successful as some English clubs, yet based on the money we see in our game from SKY is it any wonder. Relatively speaking we do quite well when you consider there is fuck all money in the game. Throw £100m at any team and they should be good.

Having millions means fuck all if you yoyo between Championship and Prem. all it means is its cost your team shit loads more to just end up relegated. You could argue that's Sunderland are just a shite team, who spend millions in a decent league and get fuck all for it. They are up to their tits in debt and still think English football is the holy grail. English football is decent because of TV money, yet it is the sole reason why clubs like Sunderland are shite and in debt. They chase a dream that Tv money makes them believe is possible and where are they now? What have they achieved as a club ? Nothing.
No..the scottish leagues are amature

Whys that?
Little to no experience in the English leagues..thats why he went back to Wee Jimi krankie land.

He's a Sunderland man. Do you genuinely believe he'd look to benefit Rangers at Sunderland's expense?

I can't see any other reason for trying to bring in McInnes. He's had 1 job in the championship and failed miserably. Now he manages in a Mickey mouse league. He's not qualified to manage Sunderland.
