Depression

I think medication for depression only may be different to the medication you are given for anxiety only.

You can suffer from depression and still have generalised anxiety disorder too so i think there may be some medications that treat both but there are definately medications that treat one or the other but not both.

I know a lot of us can feel blue and unmotivated, but does anyone else have major problems with anger?

It's my Achilles heel. I've never been the best at asserting myself and my coping strategies are nonexistent.

Yes when my wife is driving and the smallest things makes me fume ( other drivers I mean ).
I tend to fester as well a lot :( .

Aye, festering makes up aot of it. I tend to obsess and bring up the past over and over.

Had to work on one hour of sleep because an arsehole at work had me so pent up.

I think one of the biggest mistakes with mental health in the medical profession, but also a lot with ourselves, is that almost all resources and effort is focused on treating people when they become ill rather than focusing on preventing it in the first place. Once you've gone over a certain threshold with your mental health I think its hard to recover and takes time.

There's always going to be challenges in life but I'd love to see more focus on ensuring people are optimising their mental health when it is good and identifying issues and responding more effectively and earlier when challenges arise.

I dont know if anyone has any suggestions for how they do this effectively? I always struggle with mindfulness but I try and practice gratitude and reflection.

Absolutely seems as tho you can only really get help when you are already in crisis.

Mind you we are all guilty of neglecting ourselves when we feel OK and are coping.....as if we think....this is it, we are going to feel like this forever.

A heads up that this Monday coming is Blue Monday. Whilst there’s no hard and fast science to prove it’s the most depressing day of the year, marketing teams for travel companies recognised it as a time when they should focus on selling holidays as people faced the trudge of poor weather, stretched finances etc.

Worth just keeping that extra little bit of a look out for friends, family and colleagues who may just be struggling a bit. And don’t forget to look after yourself. If possible, weather permitting, go out for a walk, run, cycle or some other exercise just to try and get the old endorphins moving around the body.

*flippancy alert

How does it feel
To treat me like you do?
When you've laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are
I thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me how do I feel
Tell me now, how do I feel

Happy new year everyone! The Friday sessions are back on tomorrow at Boldon CA.

I currently hold a free weekly session at Boldon Community Association in, the next session is on Friday 12th January at 1:30pm and every Friday thereafter. My colleague David does the Monday sessions.

Come and join us for a cuppa and a chat, we would love to see you there ☕😀

I'll be taking a pickle ball set, it's a really fun game, a bit like indoor tennis 🎾

Bang on. Exercise, noticing your mood and feelings, and TALKING. I'm not good at those things, apart from maybe the first, but I reckon they must be up there with most important things for prevention, especially the last one. I've started doing cold water swimming and I think I can feel that helping.

Yeah good list. I'm a pervese fan of cold baths and showers! @Idlewild Mackem Loves his ice baths!

Hey everyone.

Cold anything sounds torturous but we have to do what makes us feel strong. And having good healthy coping strategies is always good.

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Just wanted to say, we are all survivors, we've all tried our best and managed to overcome some crap. So for that we should all be proud of ourselves. Have a safe week end everybody.

Oh, I am with you there mate. I am an outwardly calm and controlled operator. I grind my teeth and have to stop myself from boiling over half a dozen times a day. I find swearing helps (not kidding), 'f***ing bastard thing, WHY DON'T YOU f***ing FIT FOR FUCK'S SAKE!' and then it's gone.
