But again, i dont see why anybody is debating "worth it"

Why, cos theyre being affected by random purported figures in the newspapers.

Its basically that same as not getting rid of Jozy and signing another player on £25k for a year.

Would everyone even be debating that!?!? No they wouldnt

ffs man

1) He can solve our goalscoring problems and keep us up.
2) He is worth the wages if he does this.
3) He will excite fans who had become a bit disillusioned by our unexciting football.
4) He will lift the mood of the camp and will hopefully give fans a good reason to continue to go and watch home games.
5) He will be a great mentor for Wickham. Bags of experience and that will rub off on the young lad.
6) He will inspire others around him to create more chances when they see his pace/movement.
7) He can influence the team by showing them how it's done and bring some confidence back.
8) He is a superstar and popular around the world, he could make a move to Sunderland more attractive for London-obsessed players. Many players would be attracted by the prospect of playing with him.
9) He will bring lots of outside attention to the club and the media will be more interested. That might lead to England scouts/Hodgson being more interested too. Which would benefit our other English players.
10) He can help to inspire the young lads in the team and academy players who would see him as an icon/role model.

I can think of a few more but that's enough for now.

It's not just about whether he can be amazing for 3 years. There's lots more positives than just the goals he might bring too. Someone like Altidore (bless him) was never going to have this kind of impact. In fact, Altidore was having an extremely negative impact. What Defoe brings us is goals, positivity and that superstar factor that we've not had for a long time.

This could be a massive turning point for this club.

Agree he will improve our forward line end of.

Anyone remember Kevin Phillips he played on till late 30`s wish we had resigned him when he was 32 we have been desperate for a fox in the box.

Positive move by the club

We sold Kevin Phillips when he was around 30 and he went on to score 111 league goals. Age is just a number.

Bullshit, its not just anyone, its proven premier league class, and we've peddled a donkey. Great deal!

My point is that Defoe is not part of any masterplan. He's just a player who has been peddled to every club by his agent, and we're the only one willing to give him a 3.5 year deal.

That doesn't make him a bad player, but it does raise major questions about our recruitment policy or lack thereof.

Buying better players works for me like.

Since Fletch has come into the Premier League he has played 158 games and scored 48 goals. In the same period Defoe has played 129 games and scored 45 (not including 11 goals in 16 games in USA). This is up to date so includes Fletcher having a full year on him and bearing in mind that a majority of Defoe's appearences will be subs whereas Fletcher have been mainly starts.

As I said....PL goals over the last 4 seasons bar this one (as obviously Defoe was in Toronto)

Defoe.......2013/14.......14 apps 1 goal
.................2012/13.......34 apps 11 goals
.................2011/12........25 apps 11 goals
.................2010/11........22 apps 4 goals.........Total apps 95.....total goals.....27

Fletcher....2013/14.......20 apps 3 goals
..................2012/13.......28 apps 11 goals
..................2011/12........32 apps 12 goals
..................2010/11........29 apps 10 goals......Total apps 109....total goals....36

Of those 14 games in his last season 11 were as sub so probably not much playing time.
