Defoe

Firstly, ive got no idea if this Defoe deal will work out on the pitch, like all deals none of us do.

However, i would commend Congo for some "Out of the Box Thinking".
He's wheeled and dealed to get a wage off our books that was sadly providing very little. He's pretty much maximised that player's value given the circumstances. He's brought in a player against that value so apart from a bit extra money the true cost has been minimised.

As i said, i don't know if it will work, the scouting and checks are down to him too. What i will credit him for is giving us another roll of the dice for a new player to hit the ground running. Apart from the scouting he can do no more.
If Congerton can keep on putting bullets in the gun, then sooner or later they will fire.

Credit to Congo (on this deal).
Can you put some figures to your speculation?

Both Bent and Defoe are at best mediocre footballers, whereas Phillips was decent and didn't need to heavily rely on others to set him up with scoring chances.
Bollocks that fella Defoe is every bit a footballer Philips was, he's record and playing at a higher level than Kev ever managed is proof of that.

what a load of shite, when SKP decided to play more football and not sit around the penalty area he scored less goals.

I don't get why the wages are being included in the transfer fee, when does that ever happen? If it's £14million WITH wages then that must only be around £3-4million in actual fee to Toronto, given it's a 3 year contract.
Because it's not a normal deal it's a swap with little else known, so media just making a bigger shock story out of it.

Also if he does have little money to spend, then this is a very good bit of business by him. I like and rate the guy. ( being welsh helps a bit )

because we'd be buying him from MLS not a club, thats how they do it

Reading reports, it looks like we've got an extra roll of the dice for an extra few grand per week.
It's irrelevant how much the two players were valued at, either £1 or £100million, they basically cancelled each other out.

As i said, he could turn out a flop, but Congerton's brokered a deal to give us another roll at the casino table.
If this one doesn't work out and he manages a similar deal, sooner or later it'll land on our number.

With regards to his age, if we compare him to Poppins for example. Old Weatabix head was still scoring regularly for the filth until he was 36.

Can you everyone being happy with SAFC starting the 2015/16 season with Defoe leading the line?

I can't.

Where does he go in 18 months? Who will buy him?

No player would make everyone happy. If he comfortably helps us stay up this season he'd be a worthwhile addition. We can't spend our lives worrying about what will happen but if Defoe plays his part I can see him getting picked up on a free by a London club or going back to the MLS.

I do think the contract is longer than I would have expected. Many said the same about O'Shea and we've just extended his and had good value from him. We're screaming out for some proven quality up front and need it urgently and Defoe's length of contract illustrates the reality of our position.

Is the deal anything to do with Congerton?
We know he's the dof so I'd guess it does just like every transfer since he's been here.

Personally i think it smacks of an obvious signing from a bottom half club shitting their pants and hoying money about with little thought.

I'd be laughing if QPR had done it.

Hope i'm wrong like.
I'd be gutted if qpr got him that would be two good goal scorers they'd have.

It's just that you were talking about 'maximising that player's value' and for 'a bit extra money.' I just wondered what you based that on? Approximations would be acceptable.

If he'd just gone out and signed Defoe you'd possibly be correct. In his eyes, and probably mine too, it's a nothing to lose deal.
It has to be worth a try, given the alternative of paying £40k/week for Altidore providing very little.

It's just that you were talking about 'maximising the player's value...'

He has, how much would Altidore fetch in the open market now, given the limited potential clubs due to his wages? We might've ended up losing money just to get him away.

Congerton has got us another roll of the dice by implementing this deal. Apart from the scouting side of Defoe he couldn't have realistically done much more.
