The truth is you just don't like anyone to air views which don't concur with your own. Why is it wrong that some people on here have had a look at his recent PL track record (compared to Fletchers it's worse) and conclude that £12m on a 32 year old may not be a prudent use of funds.......and criticism from you, who constantly berates others for not facing up to the club's financial reality is rich indeed.

Absolutely wrong. I am happy for people to disagree with me and I am often wrong. I do tire of people constantly being negative about anything the club does, constantly thinking of new ways to have a go - I often wondered why Redgauntlet had wasted so much of his life following a club that he was so negative about to the point of bitterness - you are beginning to appear like that. BTW I think you are mixing me up with someone else - if you can point to a thread where I have mentioned the club's financial reality I'd be surprised. My main point is that, for all the constant negativity, we are going through a high point of supporting the club since I began going in '74 and, therefore, someone at the club is doing something right.

fair play to the OP. Theres some reet doubting thomases on here man :D

fair play to the posters who called this the day before yesterday but didnt put stuff on the main board though

;)

Just looked up his stats there.

He's a very streaky player - gets the headlines with good runs of games, but usually ends the season on 10-13 goals.

He scored a goal in England every 2.8 games (including his time at Bournemouth). Not bad, but we're going to need him fit every game and scoring from the off if he's going to justify that ridiculous contract.
One scoring streak and he's money well spent. It sounds daft but it's not essential that he bangs them in week in week out. Three or four winners in those home games will do.
Say for instance he'd been here from the beginning of the season and had three league goals by now, the jury would probably still be out on him. But those three goals may just equate to six extra points, making our season look totally different.

No but I think he would be an excellent signing - high profile, still in good form/fit etc and exactly the sort of boost we need after the lows of Hull/Liverpool. As much as anything its a good statement when a number of other Premier teams were after him.

As I said on here regardless of the 'feel good' of such a signing we will always get the likes of you or Lord Alfred to drag up stats that prove that we are idiots to be pleased with a signing. As usual I try to be optimistic.
Fair enough is there anything wrong with me feeling our problems are a lot more than just bringing in a striker ?

Wages only isn't it? And it's the average wage at a lot of clubs anyway.

If he scores goals - even just 7or 8 it might be enough to guarantee Premiership football. The question I can he in this team as it would take a change in style of play.

It's wages, but wages that (I presume) are now out of the budget. If we could spent £80pw, surely we could've brought in a high quality loanee until season end? Defoe seems like a short term answer that we've tied to a long term contract.

It could make sense on the pitch, I'm not disputing that. I just don't know what it says about out so-called recruitment model.

Mind, I wouldn't expect him to score 7 or 8. Look at his - even based on his peak, we'd be look at 4 or 5 for the rest of the season.

Which will probably make him our highest goal scorer

I agree with that, and we're better on the pitch with him rather than without.

My concern is that Defoe signals the end of our search for a goalscorer. I though we had someone whose full time job was to scour the globe for talent. Signing Defoe is only half a step up from Robbie Keane.

Dear me, there are some seriously depressed people on here. To my mind we need a boost and Defoe would give us this. He would make things happen - however, I know the likes of you and Lord Alfred have all the statistics to burst my bubble.
Worried about service , if he doesnt get the service its dead money , i just hope we have a bit more to come

We can get another one in the summer. That's the way we do things

A lot of my posting is generally neutral or positive. I've got opinions and they're as valid as yours. Just because you choose to always see things positively it doesn't mean that those of us who prefer to take a more critical view of things shouldn't air our views. It's hard to argue that the club have made a success of things since our last promotion.....yes, we're still there but it's largely been down to a bounce factor generated by sacking the manager each year. All we want to see is the club making better decisions on managerial appointments and player recruitment and I doubt even you would argue that we've been successful at those aspects these last few years.

That was in an attacking Spurs side, mind you. Darren Bent scored 12 goals for Spurs in 08/09, a season considered by most to be a flop. In the same season, Defoe scored 9 for Portsmouth / Spurs.

But, as @DufraisFTM points out, all we need from him is a few winners in games we're currently drawing.

Holy shit we look like signing one of the highest scoring strikers in the history of the league and people are moaning!!

Not you - I agree with you totally.

Well, he's in the top 15.

So are Dwight Yorke and Robbie Keane.

He has good movement, better than we currently have. Hopefully that will see an upturn in our attacking play.

Forgetting about the numbers of his contract his signing will/would be a timely boost and increase the quality of the starting 11, I'm happy with that.

We have made chances this season and not taken them, so hopefully Defoe will be clinical when they come in future.
