What about his disinterest prior to his first spell ending?

Looked a bit disinterested a few times before that as well. I remember his touch map for Spurs away in the 2nd half that season:

I agree. I was down Boro & was pissed off with him more than anyone else cos he set his own standards.

He’s had some amazing times here, which he should rightly get credit for. His part in the relegation season & hoying the towel in this season doesn’t shouldn’t be exirmpt cos he was good before.

Again, see my post.
What part was that in the relegation season ?

He was absolutely class in his first spell, we shouldn’t forget that

I do think the drawn out media flirting and then subsequent retirement is poor form personally. He may not be up to it anymore. But we’d have signed someone else (hopefully) and at least had some depth

Club to blame as well obviously
Good summary that. It's a massive shame the way this second spell has played out has tarnished the first one, but it has unfortunately.

26th April if I’ve looked it up right.

There’s no denying his success before, but unfortunately it’s the reason we signed him. Not one person, club or supporter would have wanted to sign him if it wasn’t for those couple of good seasons. The rise tinted glasses was horrendous. Saying that, even as someone who thought we shouldn’t have signed him back, I had a romantic notion that he’d score the winner at Wembley. Not if he can’t be arsed like.

Go on ….

Must admit I was pissed off when he knocked us back for West Brom but sharp got over that, but even before that there was an old poster on here called Corvus who absolutely despised him, to the point it became an obsession. He also used to say he 'feckin' hated him which is the shittest word ever invented - either swear or don't swear.

Remember him saying Phillips 'bad attitude' rubbed off on the quiet, hardworking lads like Gavin McCann. That'll be McCann who put in a transfer request about 18 months before Phillips then? No reply...

Quinn bizarrely got a fair amount of stick on here for working for Sky after leaving from people who couldn't grasp that sitting on a studio talking about football for one day a week was different to running a Premier League club as chairman.

It was t just one match. It was THE match which surrounded loads of others where he’d completely given up, along with his teammates. It made me sad as he’d set his own N’Dong & Gibson & Manquillio didn’t upset me, they were playing to form. They were always shite & I didn’t expect anything more. Defoe lowered his own standards for a big part of that season.

Aye, let's just focus the last 7 games and not all good times he gave in his first spell here.
Aye.
It's his second spell that's the issue. 🤷‍♂️
How much was spent on the signing ?
If it's nowt then fair enough
If it's a decent wedge then he had our pants down - unless he's paying it back.

Vauxie called this mind to be the Sham it’s been.

It didn’t have to be a sham. This is where the club comes in. If we’d have signed another serious striker & Defoe as a bonus, f***ing great. Maybe a bit financially extravagant, but y’know. He should never, ever, have been our January window striker signing. The club fucked up by falling for it all, the majority of fans fucked up for raising the pressure to sign him. If I said it was 75/25 in favour of the signing I’d be under estimating.

I’ve said it before since he retired, but if there’s not a great excuse that hasn’t been made public he’s a twat because he’s dropped everyone in it. If Sunderland would let me come on for 10mins a match & try & help out, I’d pay them. I’d play for the team & cause, not my own agenda. I’d probably contribute more than Defoe did.
Didn’t he struggle to get in the team when allardyce took over
Played wingback a few times.

Scored 15 goals in that season
Impressive considering the absolute shite he was playing with week after week
You obviously have an agenda against the bloke

In the second half of the season, he scored 2 penalties, 2 goals when we were already 2-0 up & one when we were already relegated. He downed tools with the rest of them.

I’ll look back on the two previous seasons fondly. Newcastle, Chelsea, Bradley Lowrey. What I’ll not take kindly to is giving up when you’re being paid £50k/£60k a week or signing for someone & deciding you don’t fancy it sux weeks later, even though there’s five weeks left. Jermain Defoe clearly signed for Jermain Defoe & not to get Sunderland promoted. It doesn’t matter how past it he is, how old he is, how he doesn’t feel as if he’s at his best, if we could have used him for 5mins before now & the end of the season he owed that to us, because he said he’d do that when he signed a contract.

I hold Defoe in very high regard. I am not sure he qualifies as a legend , in fact I don't think he does...a very good striker who's off the field character elevates him, and rightly so - brilliant.

I think Longy is right, most of the squad in the relegation season downed tools and it's with regret that I would include Defoe in that. Longy seems to feel more strongly about it, I still think he was a good servant to the club and should be looked back on favourably.
