Defoe in a coaching role

No thank you. A senior player than downs tools two months into a contract and two months before the end of a season with young and inexperienced team mates hasn’t earned the right to then come back and coach them.
Ah, so this is going to be this decade's "Super Kev downed tools in the final season" craic is it?

He tried to come and do a job. It hasn't worked out as he has wanted. He doesn't feel able to perform. Let it be.

If we our promotion push is exposed by a near 40 year old not being able to get on the pitch to the standard he expected, then that says a lot more about us than it does him.

No. Phillips didn’t down tools. He played in a deeper role, starved of service, was managed horribly by Wilkinson and then McCarthy and was sold for money at the end of the season.

Defoe was a fantastic player for Sunderland first time round. He came back to the club less than two months ago, signed a contract and has now left us an experienced player and striker short at the business end of the season. Unless he had an injury he wasn’t going to recover from before season end he should have stuck it out. If, like the poster mentioned, he’s a good head round the place and an example to the young players then he could have continued to demonstrate it for a couple of months at a critical juncture of the season. He hasn’t so why discuss a coaching role?

Possibly, although I don’t see why. Something close to his heart and benefitting local grass roots football club as well.

I'd hope not for their sake, but they may want to let the dust settle a bit. Hopefully there won't be any overly awkward questions

He’s been playing with Cory Evans, of course he’s decided to jack it in and get as far away as possible.

Haway man. He has a contract until the end of the season that he could have quite easily seen out and collected his £

The fact that he’s retiring with immediate effect makes it clear that’s there’s a rabbit away somewhere here.

He won’t have anything to do with us in a coaching capacity if he’s that desperate to get away from the playing side.

I had a chat with my Dad when the JD news broke. He wondered if this means he might stay on in a coaching role.
I'm not sure what if any badges JD has done, but if the option came up for him to stay on and join the coaching staff or even join the coaching staff after completing his badges, you'd want him to come back wouldn't you?

No idea what his plans are, but having someone of that calibre teaching and encouraging the players can't be a bad thing
what if he is a shit coach as so many ohtwer good footballers have been..would it be a bad thing then?

evans is now a better player than defoe and defoe has played hundreds of games of pro football with worse players than evans

I'd like to think he'd be pretty competent if he's done his badges and has the experience he has, but I think it's clear that's not the route he's going down
