If Collingwood gets poached or retires, what is going to be the situation with our captaincy?

Its obvious Mark Stoneman has been earmarked for the roll but having seen him in charge over the last 2 seasons I wouldnt trust him to captain a club cricket 3rd XI. Ive an awful feeling DCCC will just carry on regardless irrespective of our limited overs plight.

Who are the other candidates...? I presume Bowlers are out of the question.

Mustard has had a go & was tosh. Rico, Muchall arent garunteed a game. Stokes is a non starter. I like Scott Borthwick but does anyone take him seriously? At 24 is he too young? Seems very much a jack the lad (in a professional way). Keaton Jennings has impressed me but he is a baby, would he command the respect of his elders?

They will persevere with Rocky until he cracks. Thats the way it has worked in the recent past. smith went under a cloud, the Colonel was a reluctant captain, Colly fell into our laps when he gave up England but ultimately and IMHO we do not have a natural captain at the club. We need a Benkenstein but we dont have one and one would cost money which we seemingly dont have.

We all saw how the likes of Boon and Hussey came and had a massive influence at the club. We need something similar to happen.

If colly does go it will free up some money to get an overseas pro. Someone like Adam Voges would be a good candidate to come in as a skipper. I would prefer George bailey mind but doubt we could get him

Really do think we're heading towards needing an experienced overseas head. If it has to be internal then I wouldn't be amazed if they went with Muchall if they really felt Stoneman couldn't handle it.

If Colly does go at the end of the season for whatever reason be it his or the clubs it will be fascinating to see if the club make a major signing for next season or if Collys salary is this years cost cutting exercise. If they do have to make further cuts at the end of the season i think only Colly and Borthwick are out of contract. With Stokes the only Durham players anywhere near to being awarded a central contract.

Be interesting too see what happens with Borthwick.

although his last couple of overs resulted in him being carted around the field a bit I noted that he bowled well in his first few overs, the game was in Brighton. Why do I mention that? Only because it has been stated that if Borthwick wants to develop his bowling then he be better off doing it on the south coast wickets rather than ours.

I think he'll stay with Durham but it wouldnt shock me if he decided to go to say Hampshire - where Benkenstein is!

Having an overseas captain would be difficult now due to IPL and the ever-expanding international calendar. Bearing in mind half the CC season is virtually over by the time IPL finishes it just wouldn't be worth it.

I think Jennings seems a tough character, if we had to go in-house, I'd be tempted to give him a go, don't like giving players criticism, but Stoneman really hasn't impressed me much in the short stuff

I agree with the obvious statements that an overseas captain would be brilliant, we haven't had many recently, and maybe an older head from outside the area would be what we need. Colly is bang in form like, shame he couldn't keep going a bit longer. Maybe we could bring in a domestic signing for captaincy? doesn't have to be foreign does it? must be some decent experienced cricketers looking for a new challenge.

Or if Stoneman is keen we continue with his development under Collingwood and help him learn the role before being thrown completely into the deep end.

I felt sorry for him last night. Yes he is captain and should have influence but Hastings was a joke at the end.

Personally I think Jennings is ideal for the captaincy. He's a very talented cricketer and also very vocal in the field. Yes some people will mention his age and say the captaincy may disrupt his development which is a fair opinion. At the moment Stoneman just doesn't look captain material. If Stoneman does get the full time job then good luck to him and he'll have my full support as he's a good lad.

I said at the time at the games and will remain in the opinion that booting Dale Benkenstein out of the club was one of the worst decisions this club will ever make.

im fairly sure jennings was captaining the u21 south african side when we picked him up so he has experience in captaincy, iirc anyhow.

ideally for me though captain would be 3-6 in the order [more so in 4 day cricket] as the pressure coming out to bat on top of batting can get a bit much when things going against you. see cook, alistair.

Didn't someone mention that Sangakkara was interested in coming back to Durham once he retires. Could be an option?

He'd have to retire from international cricket for that to happen. Could conceivably give up ODIs after the World Cup and Sri Lanka only play two Tests during the English summer next year.

I think it's very significant that Borthwick has not as yet renewed his contract and suggests he's looking to move on but not so sure how many clubs will be prepared to give him any more bowling than he gets at Durham. Jennings is a genuine contender as a future captain-as well as S.A. U19' s he also captained Stockton in NEPL when only 19 or 20. Be best, however,if Colly stayed for another year before that happens.
