Darren Gough MP (Con)!

Celebrity candidate maybe, but not an MP in a million years. There is no way he would be selected in a million years if they had the remotest sniff of winning a seat in Barnsley.

Was an article recently about cricketers' politics (New Stateman maybe).

Very few of them were left wing, Cork came over as the biggest Tory, right Thatcher worshipper.

Don't know why the Tories courted Gough, he's an illiterate embarrassment.

So in order to be working class you have to vote Labour? Some members of the working class actually have brains you know! Given that 90% of the 70 Labour MP’s who entered the House of Commons in last year’s election are Eton & Oxford University educated, what makes the working class think Labour are their party, when clearly they are no more the party of the proletariat than the Tories are.

Gough staying true to his working class South Yorkshire roots then...

And there were over 6000 Tory voters in Barnsley Central at last election.

Being from Barnsley, I can tell you if they ran a goat for election under the Labour banner, It would still win. They have Goughie pinned up on the front of Oakwell in a Barnsley top and he doesn't even support them.

Don't think Swann was mentioned in the article, not sure if he's publicised his politics elsewhere.

Doesn't strike me as keft wing though, in fact very few of current England team do.

This is based on little more than wistful thinking (probably), but I think Swann's dad is left wing.

Someone told me that Jack Russell votes Labour. I seem to remember also that Philippe Edmonds was a Liberal (as if that means anything).

Aye there were comments on the Guardian messageboard today under the Gough story which said that Russell was Labour. Apparently either Bill Athey or Chris Broad (they couldn't remember who) used to drive with him to the polling station because they cancelled each other out i.e. Athey/Broad was a Tory.

It was also said Clive Lloyd campaigned for Thatcher, never knew that, he went down in my estimation if true.

Devon Malcolm is Labour apparently.

Look I've no problem with what people vote as long as it's not BNP, each to their own. Just Gough makes a play on his tough upbringing - I'll be honest and say I don't know whether that's true and what village he comes from but those mining communities were absolutely dicked on by a Conservative government and I think he's sticking two fingers up to where he came from by backing them publically.

In The Glory Game Hunter Davies revealed that most professional footballers at the time (1972) were quite right wing, contrary to expectations. Let's face it, they probably still are today insomuch as any of them are really bothered.

Only a fool would vote for a famous cricketer, I mean they are so in touch with real life and the struggles of most others. Bit like a Tory (or any other career politician) really.
