Danny Dyer talks sense

Aye, agree with him. My brother and father in law support Arsenal but are from Durham, they'll never feel the anxiety or emotion involved when they play Spurs or the full exhilaration when they inevitably win the league this season.

I'm sure they'll enjoy those things but it's not like they interact with their rivals on a daily basis or have that sense of belonging when at the Emirates.

He is spot on I know plastic geordies from my way who are pretending that the derby tomorrow matters . But deep down they don’t give a toss . IF we get beat tomorrow I will be no good for a fortnight . WHEN those pricks get beat they will feel the same as if they win

Don't like his faux hard man image but he's dead right about who you support. Couldn't imagine picking a team to support. I mean I liked Liverpool and Forest when I was a kid as they were successful but I still went to watch Sunderland and even then I'd never had said I supported another team.

It’s true though. I massively upset a “mag” last year who was trying to take the piss because they won the Carabao and we only won the play offs. I said I’d rather win the play offs having gone to Wembley with my Dad watching the team based near where I was born and my whole family support, than what he experienced watching a club he just randomly picked win a cup in a pub in Oxfordshire. No connections to the north east whatsoever.

He’s never spoke to me since because he knows it’s true.

Same with all the Man Utd fans who took the piss out of me through school. Not one of whom will ever experience what I have supporting Sunderland.

I'll go against the grain here but it's not true any more.

This is just tribal(in the sense of location) nonsense IMO

You can have someone who is local to an area who isn't really interested in football but goes to games just to be part of a group and they won't really care

You could have someone 150 miles away who for whatever reason has followed the club since they were a toddler and they'll be living and breathing everything about the club and the players and the history.

Life and society has moved on from being born in a village and never leaving. People/families move all around the country for education and jobs, part of that sort of globalisation is being able to get attached to things that they weren't born into
