Danny Dyer talks sense

I mean specifically the rivalry aspect, I suppose.

Yeah, I was thinking more about the rivalry aspect of things than love for the club, so I don’t mean to gatekeep.

Youre probably right, i hated the mags when I was younger but never worked with them or anything like that so a huge aspect of it would have been missing. But tomorrow will still be very different from a normal match day as will the aftermath.

There is/was hell-on in some of the midlands mining areas.

We know a few mags (one lives opposite), they are mostly ok, wear shirts in pubs, a bit big-headed. It’s never led to outright violence but we sometimes exchange barbs with ones we don’t know.

A 20-something year old mag walked into one of our locals on a Saturday afternoon , no match on tv or anything. We’d been on a dog walk, I pointed at him and half-jokingly boooooooed but he wasn’t much fun.
Haha fair enough, marra - I stand corrected. Depends on your experience I suppose.

This is why I don’t mind Brentford. I’m sure they’ve picked up loads of new fans since being in the Prem, but I used to live round there when they were League One and before they moved to the new stadium. It was a good community club with a core of proper supporters.

They can still f*** off though as they beat us.

My Mam and Dad are from pit villages in Durham, i was born in Donny as my Dad came down to the SY coal fields. Was 6 in 73 and watching that final with the whole house red n white, Porterfields goal, Jimmy’s save then Bob dancing just had me hooked.
As soon as i was 13 or 14 my older Brother took me and my younger Brother to RP, the noise, tribalism and passion seeped into us all. The three of us travelled together until we lost my older Brother a few years ago, 30 odd years going together from Donny home and many times away.
The links i feel with Durham and Sunderland are anchored deep in my soul, i feel like its home, i pass the Prince Bishops sign on the way up and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, it means everything.

He’s right about the plastics though, went to school with kids that supported Leeds in the 70’s, then Man U followed by LFC, of course they denied ever supporting anyone else when challenged. No strength of character imho, Donny Rovers are right there and need them but they just can’t take the stick me and my Brothers have taken, just not forged from the same NE material i suppose.

He's spot on.

The most hilarious thing with the modern, global premier league is seeing west African Man U/Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal fans arguing with each other on the internet.

Proper cringe when one of those pops up on Twitter or whatever else giving it the big one about Chelsea.

Once knew a lad who was a Liverpool "supporter", had a season ticket for Wigan when they were in the PL and bought himself a Brentford shirt when they made it to the top flight. Some family connection to West London apparently. He also "supported" Wales at Ruby(I suspect he doesn't now) and England at football. When discussing Liverpool he always referred to them as "we" and called players by their first name or their nickname.
When I pointed out to him that I had been to Anfield twice more than him (at that point I had been twice) he became very defensive.

I moved to Cornwall when I was ten. Obviously i was massive lads fan and still am today, but the vast majority of supporters down here are Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea etc. enjoy ribbing my mates for being glory supporters or plastics, but I guess the reality for them is either support someone like Truro City, who have never been anywhere near professional level, or pick a club when they were bairns and stick with them. Can’t pick Plymouth because the Cornish hate people from Devon 😂
The daft get that got arrested for racism at argyle the other week is from Truro. There’s a lot of argyle fans live in Cornwall

I'll go against the grain here but it's not true any more.

This is just tribal(in the sense of location) nonsense IMO

You can have someone who is local to an area who isn't really interested in football but goes to games just to be part of a group and they won't really care

You could have someone 150 miles away who for whatever reason has followed the club since they were a toddler and they'll be living and breathing everything about the club and the players and the history.

Life and society has moved on from being born in a village and never leaving. People/families move all around the country for education and jobs, part of that sort of globalisation is being able to get attached to things that they weren't born into
Totally agree.

I find the policing of who people support quite dull tbh. People support their teams for all sorts of reasons.

Absolutely mate. I'm from West Yorkshire and have nor ever will live in the north east, yet I'm a lifelong Sunderland fan.

My dad is from Wirral and has never nor ever will live in the north east, yet is a lifelong Sunderland fan.

His grandson is from Sheffield and will likely never live in the north east, yet I know my dad is hopeful he'll be a Sunderland fan.
Well, his family are Sunderland fans. What's the issue?

He's not from the area and his dad isn't a Sunderland fan.
His brother is a wrangun?

My brother-in-law is from Wiltshire and is a casual Leeds fan (due to attending university there).

Ok. Father, mother or guardian's club.

Aye, agree with him. My brother and father in law support Arsenal but are from Durham, they'll never feel the anxiety or emotion involved when they play Spurs or the full exhilaration when they inevitably win the league this season.

I'm sure they'll enjoy those things but it's not like they interact with their rivals on a daily basis or have that sense of belonging when at the Emirates.

Does that mean we should be thankful for Newcastle fans ??🤔😜
