Middlesbrough used to be worse than Sunderland and now is much better. Swansea was similar to Sunderland and now is much better. Hull at one point used to be the worst city in the country and is now far better than Sunderland. Barring Stockton and Hartlepool there is now large settlement more bleak and depressing than Sunderland in the North East. One step forward Sunderland has now made is the opening of the medical school albeit years too late. The distinctive lack of professionals in Sunderland and the failure to attract them is what has left them behind.

I worked down Middlesbrough for a decade until last year and I’m not having that like :lol: Never been to Swansea so couldn’t comment. Went to Hull about 5 year ago and unless there has been a dramatic improvement since, it was up there with Blackpool for biggest hovel I’ve had the displeasure of visiting.

I'm assuming your talking about centres here but outside the centre Stockton is 100x nicer than Middlesbrough.

The East side of the Middlesbrough is the absolute pits. There's no where in Tyne and Wear nvm Sunderland that compares to the likes of South Bank etc. The South is no better Hemlington in particular another really grim place.

By far the worst part of the North East including the worst pit villages.

There is the key point though, Hartburn , Eaglescliffe etc are pleasant but I'm judging the area as a whole not just its good parts as everywhere has some pleasant areas ie Seaburn and Cleadon are quite nice but that doesn't detract from the city centre being an utter disgrace for a city of 300k people. I've never seen a city centre with less of a buzz around it

Most of Stockton is alright to be fair, Norton is canny aswell. Just the area where benefit street was filmed that was grim and the centre really, don't mind it too much. Can't disagree too much about the centre of Sunderland really, the Bridges is the killer imo as it's just one shopping centre with not an awful lot more and it's not particularly very nice either. At least there's plans to try and change something, whether it actually happens though is another thing but to be honest it's probably better to compare Sunderland to other large town's imo. It's no different other than it got a title in the 90's, the centre has declined pretty much ever since it got it aswell.

Durham is the worst centre in the North East though, the place has so much potential with one of the nicest cathedrals in the country but it's just so poor. I always think when visiting pretty much any other old cathedral city how disappointed you'd be if you travelled all the way upto Durham. There's literally nothing to do.

I'm certainly not judging mate as I'm a Darlington man and the state of our centre now is lifting but hopefully is improving now with the regeneration plans. I hope Sunderland can thrive as I have family there just think its important to be realistic that the progress there hasn't been evident yet

I’ve read some shite on here, and this is right up there!

I’m not even from Sunderland, Shields actually although I live there now.

Having worked up and down the UK (still do) Sunderland has loads going for it. Especially during the summer month, Roker and Seaburn is absolutely class and getting better.

Funny thing is we just had a Sun City Councils year-end newsletter through the door outlining the total regeneration of both side of the River and that included the area around the SOL . Millions to be spent on top of that already invested in newly built link roads . This includes pedestrian bridge to the SOL in 2024 . Agree the Stadium needs investment but remember its only filled with people 23 home matches a year and stands mostly idle for the other 342 days. That , apart from the odd music event.
