Makes sense to me that pitches can soften up without the roller. Less effect of seam. I imagine it was always an essential implement for our attack .
I don't pretend to know all the science like, seemed that colly was concerned about lack of swing, not seam

So we used it for 2nd innings against the ciders?

The general consensus at the Riverside is that the ball starts to seam more once the effects of the heavy roller wear off, that didn't seem to be the case during the Somerset game. The lack of swing shouldn't have anything to do with the use, or lack of, the heavy roller, it's cloud cover that seems to make the ball swing here (and bowlers skill).

There didn't seem to be much difference at the Riverside in the wickets from the season before last when the heavy roller was banned, to last season when the heavy roller was allowed every innings.

The changes in the wickets may have something to do with the new drainage system installed two years ago, because the surface water is drained from the field a lot quicker now, its also drawing moister from the square more than it did in the past, which over time will cause the nature of the wickets to change. Who knows, perhaps in ten or fifteen years we'll have gone from a seamers paradise to spinner heaven?
