I thought the idea was to give extra to those most in need. I guess they were given complete freedom.

I would have preferred the extra £20 to be higher for those who are more likely to need it.

Terrible that a bloke working full time needs a council tax rebate to be able to have a well deserved weekend on the piss.
The Tory cost of living crisis is even hurting even well paid lads like you.
 
• Over the next two weeks, County Durham council tax payers who pay their council tax via direct debit, will receive the government energy grant of £150, paid into the bank account from which they pay council tax.
• If a direct debit has only recently been set up and the first payment is not until May, the grant will not be made until after the first direct debit for council tax has been made.
• The council will be writing to every household who does NOT have a direct debit set up for council tax payments at the beginning of May, asking them to apply for the grant payment via the website and they will be asked to provide bank account details for the payment to be made.
• Alternative payment methods will be offered for those who do not want to be paid by this option (payment voucher or a credit to their council tax account)

got mine
welcome funds but also bit guilty, this should be going to people who are genuinely struggling to pay bills , example if TOTAL household income is less than 25 (30k at push)

Problem is, to do that is more costly means testing.

They could just give it to those who receive benefits / pensions. But as we saw with the temporary £20 UC uplift, as soon as they say its coming to and end, there's hell on. And won't want that again

The way it's being done probably is the most efficient way of doing it, even though you're going to end up with loads getting it who don't need it (similar with pension winter fuel allowance)

It's a completely inefficient way of doing it. It's costing an absolute fortune for local authorities to administer it. Why on earth deduct 40000 payments (approx for Sunderland) by BACS in April then pay money back. It's meant software companies development to accommodate the scheme....which costs money. Or using a 3rd party like Allpay to make the payments....more money.

25k cap would mean a household with 2 minimum wages wouldn't qualify.

If you're suggesting they just take the money from council tax payments, the admin behind that adjusting everyone's account will be horrendous.

If they're making bacs payments every day as part of their normal business then adding some more onto it isn't going to cost more

Even your previous suggestion of giving the money to the electric companies would be a nightmare from an admin point of view, as they'd then need council tax bands from the entire country to look up against their customer base.
