Prior, Broad or Pietersen. Possibly even Collingwood as interim skipper. There are no outstanding candidates, but I do believe we would be far better with Cook's runs than his captaincy.
Broad is the only one who could possibly be considered. Prior isn't in the team, KP probably won't be (and at 33 is not the right choice). Are there any good captains in County Cricket who are worth a punt in a Mike Brierley style?[DOUBLEPOST=1390251013][/DOUBLEPOST]
Broad is the only other one who could be test skipper IMO.
Imagine how quickly we'd use up our DRS reviews though! probably by the 8th ball of the innings

Not many natural choices, not keen on Broad though comes across as a spoiled brat, always seems to twist when a misfield of his bowling,a captain needs to encourage his team.

Is 33 really over the hill? Brearley played till his mid-40's.

Andrew Gale would be the obvious candidate, and only 30.

Probably not, but KP is constantly on the verge of retirement and extremely injury prone (in his mind anyway). Seeing as our Top 6 don't score that many runs anyway, is it worth sticking in someone who is the best captain out there but will score no runs.......so like Cook, but a good captain

Yes, going to Hampshire supposedly.

Benks has another year on his contract doesn't he?

Why would he go elsewhere when his body is practically shot and turn his back on the county he has given many years service to and is seen by many supporters as the best player to set foot in the home dressing room?

Even if Durham let him go for economic reasons (like Smith) he would surely just stay in SA where he is at the moment.

He is going to Hampshire to be player coach and then take over the role full time the season after next. The coaches role at DCCC is now blocked for him. I think that colly has pushed for Lewis when benks thought that the job would be his.

Any replacement Captain should be someone with experience of captaining a side in county cricket. If there isn't a decent candidate, then perhaps Cook needs some advice from someone like Michael Vaughan who has been there and done it. Maybe get him in as a consultant and let Cook grow into the role.

Looks like you where spot on when you mentioned on here there was bother at the club even before Benks did a shoot back to South Africa during last season. So we get Colly Hampshire get Benks. Be interesting to see if Durham attempt to sign anyone before start of the season, i thought the squad looked threadbare last season but crickey no Benks no Stokes and possibly missing Borthwick for a fair chunk of the season.

don't rate bowlers as captains but especially not broad, as above he is far too petty, spoilt and just not captain material for me at all. i would much sooner keep cook in place, i would much sooner keep him captain and consider dropping him to bat at 3 than the other way around.

re benks i would be gutted to see him suit up for another county. whether it is for the best for him i can't dispute... puts us dccc lads in an awkward situation - as a local lad colly is a legend but benks is an adopted local lad and has been here and been doing it for us, whilst colly has been representing us internatioanlly... tricky. i guess ultimatly colly is a sunderland lad, whilst benks has been allowing the likes of stokes to knock about with mags, would never have happened under colly. for that reason.... no, i'm still torn, desperatly trying to convince myself.

Has there ever been an opening bowler as a testcaptain?

or just a fast bowler in general?

Andrew Flintoff, Bob Willis, Shaun Pollock, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Courtney Walsh, Sammy? Can't think of any Australians mind.

Wholeheartedly agree with both the England and Durham viewpoints although I don't understand the quip about Stokes and the mags.
Sad if Benks were to go but realistically it would be a big ask for him to justify his large salary next year given his form and fitness over the last 2 years and the fact he'll be 40 year old by next season. Best wishes to him if he can land a lengthy player-coach position elsewhere.

just looking for any way of choosing between benks and collingwood, both are durham legends and it is hard to pick between them, which seems to be the situation we were in, that is why i was clutching at straws for reasons to be more pro colly than benks.

agree obviously, will be massive disappointment to lose either of them. in previous discussions i have been more pro benks than colly as i feel benks would commit himself more long term to us, whereas collingwood would be more likely to stick around for a bit then leave for an england role.
